Animal of the day (029)
Formerly considered a single species, Hoopoes are colourful birds found across Africa, Asia, and Europe. They are solitary foragers that typically feed on insects, but small reptiles, frogs, seeds and berries are sometimes taken as well. In what was long thought to be a defensive posture, hoopoes sunbathe by spreading out their wings and tail low against the ground and tilting their head up; they often fold their wings and preen halfway through. They also enjoy taking dust and sand baths. Its call is a soft "oop-oop-oop".

ESPERA
La leña seca espera,
paciente, la llegada
de la estación del frío,
cuando el hogar se impregna
con el humo de ancestro
en su boca de lumbre.
Pájaros escondidos
duermen en nuestras alas,
bajo sombras de sueño.
Pero aún es septiembre
y el cielo domestica
su luz en las orillas.
En el tiempo dormido
―el tiempo de la espera―
la noche bebe el agua
que corre en la clepsidra.
