i'm a fan of the idea of the renaissance man. to strive to develop proficiency in a broad set of skills. but this is easy for me to say, because that's what i happened to do. it began with computers and code, but it turned out that whatever my brain is doing when i do that can be generalised.

i have some weird code tics. i'll be bothered by how some variable names look ugly in the editor in terms of the letter shapes, so i pick a better name that looks more aesthetic. i'm also bothered by code that looks badly indented or cluttered. the visuals of the source code need to look good, even if it doesn't matter in the pragmatic sense.

that kind of thing is more useful when i'm actually doing typography or graphic design, but it doesn't automatically switch off when i code.

when i edit video, i use the same sense of rhythm i use when i make music. tah dah DAH and we cut to the next scene. video editing can be like a waltz. also, colour. drawing makes you aware of colours, how they blend, what looks right, so when it's time to colour grade stuff, you're a painter of colour in film in addition to conducting the video orchestra.

and when it's time to design an electronic device with a chassis, i'm an engineer, a visual designer and a UX designer at the same time.

to me, these things aren't so separate. they overlap and the boundaries are blurry. most people have what, to me, feel like oddly narrow fields of interest with oddly crisp boundaries between them. "no, we do not mix these things. also, i am only good at this one thing."
