It's commonly held by well-meaning people that we must respect the beliefs of others.

This presupposes that any and all beliefs are respectable. No one thinks this; and if you think you do, I can establish with a very small number of questions that in fact you don't.

Couldn't quite make it through all of Avatar. That corny 50's pig violence thing so stale and revolting. And, special gripe, why can't noble natives use contractions? I do not understand this thing.

@Fife4Europe The last laugh is theirs, in convincing you that horsemeat was the worst thing they're putting in your food.

On the question of AI and the future of humanity, I think Porno for Pyros pretty much called it.

@mrcompletely @JohnShirley2023 Good point about legalization being better from a regulatory and product safety standpoint. I'm not likely to ever use heroin, but if I did I'd want some legally produced pharmaceutical grade and not something made in a washtub in abandoned building.

@JohnShirley2023 My concern is that all those historically benign use cases involve remote ancestors of these new, incredibly concentrated cultivars with their advanced grow-ops. Pharmacologically bears as much resemblance to that Oaxacan ditchweed you remember from college as the F35 Joint Strike Fighter does to a house wren.

They had some amazing sketches. This is another favorite; had a colleague of mine from Montreal dying in the hallway describing it to me the next day:

After a while it gets to be easy to spot when people believe things on the basis of wanting to believe them rather than having reasons to.

So I assume the world's industries are still feeling clever about having outsourced all their manufacturing to China...

@adhdmarie We have a cat who will walk away from a clean bowl of fresh water every time to drink instead from the dank, mossy bucket that the neighbor leaves under his downspout.

@RobertMaguire Do you use some kind of app to do this? Seen over here on mastodon it's completely decontextualized.

Sitting at a traffic light an hour ago, I saw a transfer-style sticker in the rear window of the SUV in front of me, that read

WHY ARE YOU WEARING A MASK IN YOUR CAR??

Two things came to mind:
1) Why are you so concerned about what other people do to protect themselves and others that you not only obsess over it but actually went to the trouble to obtain and apply this message to the back window of your car?
2. I often don't bother to pull my mask off right away when I get into the car. Sometimes I don't get around to taking it off at all between stops. Because unlike you, I don't like to imagine that my mask is hurting me, and I genuinely forget about it sometimes.

@lauren @mathew @kkeller

I'm delighted not to know about this and with luck can keep it that way. I did see the pilot for the US remake of The IT Crowd, and you should see my therapy bills.

(That said, i think I'd like to pitch "Reb Dwarf", about a Confederate ironclad that somehow gets launched into space in the 1860s.
Where's my free money, Netflix?)
