@historian1661 @Popehat Definitely had a Lucy-gonna-pull-the-football-from-Charlie-Brown vibe to me.

@anlomedad @rahmstorf Where do you imagine poor countries are going to find the resources to move their coastal cities inland? Where are Pacific Island nations like Kiribati going to go at all?

@ottocrat For hell's sake. And (in addition to your fundamental point) there's just no way there could be unintended consequences either, eh? Large yet shortsighted engineering projects don't never have those.

@JohnShirley2023 If it was between a 5x Nobel prizewinner and a bag of fermented mule dung, they'd still insist on handicapping it to make it a horserace.

@RollingStone
"My neighbor went to a neighborhood watch meeting, thereby provoking me to do a home invasion, shoot members of his family and kidnap his kids."

@JohnShirley2023

Indeed, my preferred state is "stunned". A bit like a cow a few moments after it slides down the ramp into the slaughterhouse. Can you do that for me, Sarah?

@JohnShirley2023 The coulombic efficiency of first charging Li-Ion batteries from AC and then discharging and converting back to AC must be horrible. From a carbon perspective you might as well throw a couple of tractor tires on a bonfire while you're at it.

@Fife4Europe I'd like to see a story that ran "Arron Banks accuses Carole Cadwalladr of --- oh hell I can't even finish writing this headline, he's a twat okay?"

@malwaretech On the positive side if AI's going to put people out of their jobs, I'm not altogether displeased if scammers and liars are the first to go.

@michael_w_busch 16 year olds serving alcohol "with the written permission of a parent"

Oh, well, that's okay then, since the parents most likely to give permission are too illiterate and/or drunk to put it in writing.

@michael_w_busch Because honestly, who *doesn't* want to see their 14 year old covered in blood and shit cutting up cattle corpses with a chainsaw?

society: damn misinfo at scale is getting a bit out of hand lately. seems like a problem.

tech guys: i have invented a machine that generates misinformation. is that helpful?

@howlinhobbit @JohnShirley2023 I note with amusement that the party that won't let go of her one-time ill-judged Native American claim is clinging just as hard to George Santos.

@vvandinsky @JohnShirley2023
In unaccustomed defense of "most Americans", it's probably worth factoring in that his accomplishments don't feed the outrage cycle and are thus underreported.

I still think it's funny that smart electrical sockets came onto the market about 5 years after the last appliance more complicated than a table lamp that can be left in a switched on state and controlled via its power cord went off the market.
