I think it's terribly wrong that we're seizing Russian oligarchs' yachts without recompense. If we had any compassion at all we'd compensate them with one of the things they've shown they'll do anything for: a washing machne, or a jar of Nutella.

Driver only operation on trains cannot be allowed to go ahead.

I was attacked on a train platform as my train pulled in when I was 17, I was terrified and ran on to my train and down the train towards the guard as the train pulled out of the station. They saw the attack happen and where coming to meet me. They sat with me the whole journey home and comforted me. I don't know what I would have done without their support. Thank you #RMT for striking, for us and for you! ✊✊

Why does Amazon Prime video position the pause and skip controls right smack in the middle of the viewport and dim down the entire image so you can see them? How can you be in the business of streaming video and think it's your job to deliberately obscure it while people are trying to use it?

If this place becomes the new twitter, the world will probably be a slightly better place for it and it's something I hope to see..

But somewhat paradoxically, Mastodon itself will become a worse place than it was, in part because of a few inevitable twitterlike characteristics it is taking on that simply go with the territory.

I find this site a lot quieter with media hidden by default, but it'd be nice to have a setting to exempt those you follow.

Twitter's visual noise wearied me, but If I didn't want to see your stuff I wouldn't be following you.

It’s happening. My son (14) tells me that one of his classmates suddenly realized in school this morning that he must give a presentation he should have prepared. He quickly got #ChatGPT to do it, presented the result in class and got the top mark.

Science education in an age of twitter disinformation

tl;dr — Science education needs to adapt to a world of misinformation on social media and beyond. Today, prominent antivaxxer Robert F. Kennedy Jr. tweeted the ridiculous claim that as director of the NIAID, Dr. Fauci bought the silence of the entire worldwide virology community by handing out research grants. Elon Musk then affirmed and amplified his claim.

It's really cool that Twitter shuts down in stages over two months so that the Mastodon servers aren't overloaded all at once, very thoughtful of them!

#Mastodon: Strong legal warning from french digital minister to #ElonMusk, in response to new #Twitter policy launched Sunday

Second thoughts about firing Twitter legal counsel Elon?

I notice nobody's registered strewth.social. (UK and AU readers will get it.)

I think I'm over my registering funny domains phase, so have at it somebody. Promise you'll actually put a site there; preferably a mastodon instance.

"Our loss of access to Horizon Europe has reduced the funds available for UK science. Since Brexit, we’ve had far fewer postdoc applications from continental Europe. I still have very talented people in the lab; a lot of them are from China these days, very few from continental Europe. The way the UK government is currently conducting itself, and the fact we are now out of the EU, makes it more difficult for us to recruit top scientists. I very much hope even at this late hour, for the sake of the next generation of young UK researchers, that a way will be found for the UK to be part of Horizon Europe science funding."
