@greegreehoist That just means double dessert if I have any say about it.

@fox I think the only allowed move is to move of the desk a little to the left so that their butt also gets some sun.

Anyhow the Google quasi-monopoly on web browser technology is bad.

Firefox is in low single digits.

Only competitor is Apple, but Safari isn't available on all platforms.

Google needs to be force-split up in multiple companies like 10 years ago.

If you ever feel bad about how you look, remember that there's always a pornhub category you fit in.

@twitnews I wouldn't call them users until they stay on it for a bit.

I’m no financial expert, but it looks to me like they’re organizing a hedge fund.

@grmpyprogrammer Even if your favourite language is deemed obsolete, if it was popular enough in its time, you should be able to eek out a warm enough position as a legacy app support guy.

And come on, it's just Perl ;)

The piece that the the New York Times made about the latter from #OpenAI and friends about the existential risks posed by AI has so much bull in it that it might have been written by a chatbot as well.

Seriously stuff like: "They say the technology has shown signs of advanced abilities and understanding [...]"

Sure, take the points made by an executive at face value, it's not like he's trying to hype the thing into the stratosphere and pump up his shares.

On Monday morning we (Mozilla) detected a very large crash spike affecting #Firefox users on Linux, specifically on an older version of a Debian-based distribution.

It turned out to be an interesting bug involving the #Linux kernel and #Google JavaScript code so let me tell you about it.

This is an interesting take on the whole Meta vs. Fediverse thing, the history of XMPP vs. Google, and so forth;

ploum.net/2023-06-23-how-to-ki

It misses a few things that are in my recollection of those years, though. First of all, in my circles, we lived in the original ICQ client, and then in multi-protocol clients like Trillian, and Adium. The only reason we even knew or cared about XMPP is because it allowed those clients to talk to people on Google Talk, and Facebook Messenger.

Yes, Facebook used to support XMPP, too. After a while, it became a pain to use because the protocol didn’t support custom emojis, and it was removed.

@estelle I get your point, but I doubt they're actually looking for the sailors. They're looking for the expensive and secret boat.

“Imagine life is a game in which you are juggling five balls. The balls are called work, family, health, friends, and integrity. And you’re keeping all of them in the air. But one day you finally come to understand that work is a rubber ball. If you drop it, it will bounce back. The other four balls—family, health, friends, integrity—are made of glass. If you drop one of these, it will be irrevocably scuffed, nicked, perhaps even shattered.”

When Henri Matisse Was 90 Years Old, He Couldn’t Go to His Favorite Swimming Pool, So He Created a Swimming Pool as a Work of Art

@blikkie @emilygorcenski Same experience here, although I do like it. Helps a bit with enumeration and things like that, not very consistent though, so I'd prefer those features as IDE code.

Hiring a software engineer in their late 40s:

Pros:
* Understands your stack better than you do after glancing through the repo for five minutes.
* Will rewrite said stack 2x as fast, and half as buggy if you let them.

Cons:
* Gives zero fucks.
* Knows we're not *really* like family here.
* No, seriously, absolutely zero fucks given.

Do not cite the deep magic to me, product manager, I was there when it was written.

Who are the AI investors who talk about AGI allowing us to not work - secret communists, liers or ignorant? Because who exactly will own the AI? Who will benefit from is productivity? If it's everyone, then how will their investments pay for themselves? If it's the rich people then how is that different from what we're have today?
