@malwaretech What I’m hearing is that you’re paying more than necessary for rent. ![]()
If you're like me, then you were really happy to learn about Mastodon's enthusiastic support for image descriptions, and you were really eager to join in.
Then you went to actually write something and realized you have no idea how to present visual information in a way that is helpful/enjoyable to those who are #VisuallyImpaired or #Blind.
I found this guide really informative: https://uxdesign.cc/how-to-write-an-image-description-2f30d3bf5546
Of course, I'd also love to hear any additional tips y'all might have!
Ever wonder why we assign ideas about masculinity & femininity to certain colors & styles?
Until the 1940s, pink was considered a strong color most suitable for boys. Ultimately, retailers decided to associate specific colors to gender to sell more stuff... which, in reality, is kind of a scam.
Boys also used to wear dresses until age 6 or 7. They were considered gender neutral until someone dictated how we should perceive them.

@Eliot_L Fortunately, I think this will scratch my itch: http://loderunnerwebgame.com/game/
It's been a while!
@Eliot_L I have a strong urge to play Lode Runner on an Apple ][e now.
And it has to be the Apple ][e version. Thanks for that. 😆
BREAKING: Disney warns that while piracy is safe, and it is convenient, and it does allow people to access high quality versions of music, movies, and TV shows for vastly reduced costs, that the hypothetical lost revenue may also impact their share price, and limit the capital on hand for political lobbying.
Here is @karenattiah answering @Jelaniya on why she is staying on Twitter. She's right, I think: Much of the migration looks like white flight by the privileged deserting the city and its residents.
"In real life, Black women have not had the privilege of retreating every time things get tough or our spaces get taken over by rich, obnoxious White men.... The racists, fascists and trolls haven’t stopped me before. We shouldn’t let them stop us now."

Hey, can anyone here recommend me short stories by trans women authors?
Anything speculative fiction (fantasy, sci-fi, horror, etc) published in the last 5 or years. Bonus points for POC, and/or new/unestablished authors.

@jeffjarvis @malwaretech Well said, Mr. Hutchins. I think you've captured the full range of pros and cons in one piece.
There will absolutely be moderation-related drama in the future, possibly forever, because that is a human problem rather than a technical one, and requires human solutions, not technical solutions. But you're right, that drama will be completely different than the sort of drama that most people are used to seeing, and the responses will be dramatically different, too.
On twitter, it seemed like the biggest problem (for me, a cisgender white man) was the presence of people devoted to hateful trolling. On mastodon, so far the biggest problem for me is the tendency to too-quickly defederate without due process, a problem caused by the people most likely to have been targets on twitter. I assume some of it is post-traumatic, in fact.
The incentives are completely different, and so far they seem to be pointing to better places. I think things are going to look radically different a year from now, but I definitely have no fear that mastodon will still be active a year from now.

“People always say that I didn’t give up my seat because I was tired but that isn’t true. I was not tired physically… No, the only tired I was, was tired of giving in.”
#OnThisDay, 1 Dec 1955, Rosa Parks does not give up her seat on the bus for a white passenger, and is arrested. Although not the first black woman to be arrested Parks' refusal is a key moment in the American civil rights movement.

@emilygorcenski You've convinced me, at least! If I ever run a server, all languages will be welcome, and I'll just deal with moderation issues as they arise.
Also, yes, it would definitely be racist for a grocery store manager to disallow a language! I guess my only caveat would be that, unlike a grocery store conversation, posts and comments here are public forever, and can be directly linked to. So that does put a tiny bit of extra pressure on things. But I think presuming the worst for non-English posts is obviously racist, so presume the best and deal with issues if they ever come, IMO.
Another pair inspired by @LeviKornelsen, also using a single added phrase: "in front of stained glass." The MidJourney v4 prompt text is mine, based on descriptions Mr. Kornelsen gave his processed images.
I hope readers appreciate how much effort I've been putting into the descriptions for these images!
@trinsec Yes! I first tried the term because I was trying to build up prompts to replicate photography, and "magic hour" is a common term in outdoor photography. It's the hour before the sun sets, and the light is nearly magical. Turns out that it's a common enough term that the training data for MidJourney was tagged with it, and it works really well.
I find myself intrigued more and more by what just one added phrase can do to AI-generated art. In this case, the phrase is "in front of stained glass," and this entire series was inspired by @LeviKornelsen
As usual, these were generated with the MidJourney v4 model, and the complete prompt text is in the image description.
Thanks to the just-released Mothership Companion app, I have a new Mothership character!
