It's always astounding just how loud these old computers are. The noisiest part is the harddisk, but the power supply fans anen't holding back either.
Usually for an old PC like this, the power brick is an off the shelf part, and they're still made 30+ years later, so it's easy to get a brand-new one that is virtually silent.
For the hard disk, it's not a question if it will fail (if it hasn't already), just when. (Easily replaced with a [silent] CF card solution.)

@freemo @absolutus thanks. Interesting stuff. Not sure I’d qualify as a scholar but it’s nice to be here.

@extinctsnakes@mastodon.social bet that printer still works though.
I like that most bitcoin bros on Mastodon have bitcoin in their account name so I can immediately block them. That’s helpful.

👍 I recently played some of Infocom's The Hitchhiker's Guide to The Galaxy and mysteriously didn't immediately die; I actually scored some points before that. #appleII #appleIIgs #infocom #retrogaming #hgttg
@absolutus @freemo erm... why setup qoto.org? How/where is it hosted? How do you expect to cover hosting costs? What scalability limits do you think qoto might face? As I say, really I’m curious/nosy about some of this stuff.

I'm still amazed by the state of that industry. Why paying for an eBook for nearly the same price as a printed book gives you a file you don't own and you can't use, while piracy gives you a file you can use like an actual book?
When buying a book, I can read it where I want, in as many places I want, on as many couches I want, and I can even lend it to a friend. And that's legal.
Wasn't technology supposed to make the future better?

@freemo hey... you up for taking some Qs about qoto.org? I’m mainly just curious.
