One criticism of a universal basic income is that it would make work optional from an economic perspective, but I don't hear as often *why* that's a bad thing. I think there's an implicit assumption that the economy needs people to work jobs that they would only do if they don't have an option to do otherwise.

Maybe restricting our main form of public discourse and communication to message size and complexity customized to the bandwidth constraints of a random iteration of electronic device, and leaving it that way for an entire generation, wasn't the best idea after all.
