Maryland has been taking small steps to decriminalize possession of syringes and life-saving fentanyl test strips — but huge hurdles remain to harm reduction against overdoses. “I’m on year nine doing this crap,” said one lawmaker: https://boltsmag.org/maryland-harm-reduction/
I suspect, most people, know Thurgood Marshall as only a former US Supreme Court justice. This excellent article by @Teri_Kanefield explains his long, patient work out of the spotlight to overcome the evils of segregation.
How to Social Media, a Guide
1. If someone is obnoxious then block them.
2. If someone is wasting your time then mute them.
3. This is community building as it also helps prevent them attacking or distracting your allies.
4. If you want to monitor obnoxious people then get a burner account.
As Auntie Toni said, and this also applies to -isms other than racism:
“The function, the very serious function of racism is distraction. It keeps you from doing your work. It keeps you explaining, over and over again, your reason for being. Somebody says you have no language and you spend twenty years proving that you do. Somebody says your head isn’t shaped properly so you have scientists working on the fact that it is. Somebody says you have no art, so you dredge that up. Somebody says you have no kingdoms, so you dredge that up. None of this is necessary. There will always be one more thing.” - Toni Morrison

I have no idea how COVID started. I have a completely open mind and think a lab leak makes a lot of sense. But… maybe bring some evidence and not do so on a right wing entertainment outlet?
Pro tip for reporters/editors: when you quote a Republican politician referring to "Democrat" when the correct word is "Democratic," you are supposed to add "(sic)." Otherwise readers will think that you are so ignorant you don't know the correct name of one of the country's two major political parties.
Via Laurie Garrett:
NO, that is not even what the WSJ claims the DOE said. Agencies were tasked by @WhiteHouse to assess origins of #SARSCoV2 ranking options. DOE ranked lab leak "low confidence." W/out seeing full DOE rpt, no way to know what rank it gave to animal market zoonosis.
The Telegraph @Telegraph:
🔴The study is in tune with the FBI which has also blamed a leak from a Chinese laboratory for the pandemic

The eternal preference for conflict framing instead of public interest reporting on governance & what it's doing for citizens is actually the darkness wherein democracy is dying at WaPo
Last night I watched my wife, an assistant professor, spend 30 minutes Googling and practicing the pronunciation of the names of all 25+ students in the graduate class she's teaching.
Rep. Comer, R-KY, just confidently mangled the pronunciation of the names of three of the four witnesses at the Congressional hearing he's chairing today.
@kathryntewson Discussion of parking tickets as open data reminds me that a local somerville paper determined Obama was going to run because there was no other reason for someone to pay off his unpaid tickets from when he lived in somerville during law school.
So... Neil Young contracted polio as a child in the '50s.
He had to relearn how to walk, it left him permanently disabled and contributed to a serious anxiety disorder that he still deals with today.
He has epilepsy and so does his daughter.
He has 2 sons with cerebral palsy. The album TRANS was written as a way to communicate with one of them. He founded The Bridge School for kids with severe disabilities and still organizes annual benefit concerts for the school.
Neil Young understands post viral syndromes and disability better than most.
He understands public health and the importance of messaging, platforms and how they can be used to create good and to also cause harm.
In todays world, it's amazing to see someone with a huge platform use it to send such a loud and powerful message.
I have mad respect for this man and wanted to use my teeny tiny platform to shed light on some of the things that have shaped this good human who has provided the background music for so many of our lives ❤

No need to worry everyone, it's just my DoorDash!

Myth: People with mental health problems are violent and unpredictable.
Fact: The vast majority of people with mental health problems are no more likely to be violent than anyone else. Most people with mental illness are not violent and only 3%–5% of violent acts can be attributed to individuals living with a serious mental illness. In fact, people with severe mental illnesses are over 10 times more likely to be victims of violent crime than the general pop.
Retired public health scientist who loves numbers. One of the highlights of my life was when my daughter counted to 270 on her EOY kindergarten evaluation. 🤣
I rarely (never?!) post. I used Twitter as a news source and continuing ed source. I very much appreciate all the historians and lawyers on twitter who have helped me understand....some history and law of the U.S.
I love emojis and dog pictures. :)
