Sad news from UNC Chapel Hill Computer Science — Fred P. Brooks, the founder and long-time chair of the department (and a major influence on my professional outlook) passed away a few hours ago.

I think the fundamental problem with Twitter going forward now is that there's no way I can visualize where user trust, brand trust, and advertiser trust could be fully restored. There will always be that nagging fear that Elon will get up on the wrong side of the bed any day and do something bizarre that damages the Twitter ecosystem. Platform trust once lost is very difficult to regain even with sensible management.

Russia is suddenly realizing that they depend completely on Western technologies.

"If we nationalize everything, our Sapsans will stop tomorrow. What are we going to ride on? There's nothing to ride on, we just have to accept that...And what will we drive? What will we use to make phone calls? What are we going to do?...Yes, everything we have is Western."
