#TIL The popular belief is that BSD/Linux community prefers to give AMD credit by calling the 64-bit x86 as "AMD64", while Microsoft refuses to do so and only uses the boring commercial name "x86_64".

But it is not correct. Microsoft does use the term "AMD64" in the internal development environment. And in fact, Dave Cutler, a lead developer of Windows NT, was one of its biggest backer behind the name - constantly annoyed with Intel, Dave put the name "AMD64" everywhere inside the Windows NT kernel, so it becomes unwise to change - "no, we can't change it, it'll break the system!". 🤣
