I enjoyed Les' approach (stumbled across the paper in the art of unix) but haven't found anything that followed on this theme; are there any "modern" papers that take a similar, empirical approach to component size and defect density, particularly w.r.t. subroutines/functions?

I used to have this recurring dream that I was scheduled to run a foot race against a horse, and it's in this huge stadium, and all the interviews leading up to the race I try to point out that there's no way it's fair for me to race a horse.
