@bhtooefr @Robminchin Google gives me several good sources stating that by convention, noon is p.m. and midnight is a.m. e.g. https://greenwichmeantime.com/articles/clocks/noon/ .
I always use “noon” or “midnight” if there’s a chance of confusion.

@shannonrwatts@twitter.com Let’s be clear why a 6 year-old knows how to use a gun.
Meet MO State Sen Rick Brattain. Look at how angry he’s had his children look posing with guns and he in a t-shirt meant to threaten our POTUS.
They are domestic terrorists grooming their own to be domestic terrorists.
@Robminchin Confusing, yes. Ambiguous, no. 12:00 p.m. is noon and 12:00 a.m. is midnight.
Calefax recorded Shostakovich's Préludes and Fugues (originally for piano). I love their very clever arrangements and their beautiful playing. #shostakovich #woodwindwednesday
“what is the modern GOP, if not a holding station for every two-bit criminal and grifter who wants the job security that can only come with exploiting the endlessly credulous Republican base? The party can no more start kicking out the fraudsters than it can stop trying to cut taxes for the rich. This is just who they are and what they do. George Santos is in no sense an anomaly.”

@grammartable From the Times: “Did a Fourth Grader Write This? Or the New Chatbot?”. Is “did” required or at least recommended after “Or”? Without it, the suggestion is that a fourth-grader write the new chatbot. https://www.nytimes.com/interactive/2022/12/26/upshot/chatgpt-child-essays.html
Fedfree is live! https://fedfree.org/
Fedfree is a website aimed at teaching people how to run their own servers, of various kinds, on libre operating systems e.g. Linux and BSD. It aims to do this, using libre software exclusively, teaching people about the importance of libre software and hardware as it pertains to freedom; the right to use, study, adapt, share. The right to read. Universal access to knowledge… education. Education is the goal.
One tutorial so far, but more are coming.

The most telling reporting I’ve seen on Musk’s acquisition of the bird site, this article concisely lays out his financial backers. Should prompt anybody to depart the platform. https://wapo.st/3Wpbzlg (gift article, no paywall).
U.S. Police kill more than 1100 civilians annually—unprecedented in the developed world.
A new app called TurnSignl, built by Black civil rights lawyers, deescalates police interactions with civilians & get everyone home safe.
Here's how it works.
1. Download the app
2. When pulled over by police, face time a lawyer on demand via voice activation. The call is also auto recorded
3. The lawyer guides the convo.
Download TurnSignl here or gift it to a loved one for free: https://www.turnsignl.com/gift
Hello everyone! I am now on the @journa server, so hopefully this becomes my Mast forever home. AI is way more exciting when used as a piano rather than a record player.
A record player removes the need for human input: it’s cheap and relatable, but ultimately it gives you predictable results. Sooner or later, it becomes background noise.
A piano augments human input: it presents a range of good options for creative expression. By making interesting and appropriate choices, an artist can use it to forge a deeper connection with their audience.

Timothy Gowers (@wtgowers) joined Mathstodon today! He won a Fields medal for his work on functional analysis, he helped spearhead the boycott of Elsevier, he's been letting his yard go wild, and he's generally interesting guy:

He hasn't actually posted anything here yet, but I'm hoping he will, since whenever he posts on Twitter it's worth reading.
