@echo once I made the mistake of carrying a ukulele under my jacket like that.
The police ended up pulling me out of class.
@coolboymew All of these exist: federated social media, you can just get a VPS (if freaking TPB and libgen can find hosting I'm sure a microblog can) there are tons of crypto currencies and thanks to pine64 we have open source phones.
They won't do it because the people who will tolerate abusive behavior can't handle looking up new domains or slight UI weirdness on things like mastodon.
@aetios What would you say then? Do we have a phrase for "compatible enough with redhat Linux that it's not incredibly difficult to run most apps after just recompiling them?"
@aetios I tell people my portable computers run "GNU/Linux" even though all of them run alpine (or downstream distros) because it differentiates it from some of the very incompatible and anti-user Linux based OSes from Google.
@0x0f Really? GoDaddy?
@unofficial_lwn I'm always a little surprised at how comfortable the gcc devs are with breaking changes.
Maybe that just comes from maintaining a C/C++ compiler for years.
Jack Ma still missing

2 weeks later he criticized China's politics. And disappeared shortly afterwards. https://time.com/5926062/jack-ma/
The man was even replaced in a TV show, which was created by himself.
Rumors tell anything from "set under observation" to "voluntarily retired", which sounds a bit odd in comparison to his earlier appearances.

@CSB Right, it's not running an interpreter/emulator it's actually doing on-the-fly (and sometimes cached ahead-of-time like android) translation.
@CSB I don't use macs for a handful of reasons but what's so bad about Rosetta?
My understanding is that it's a JIT and most apps spend all their time idle anyway.
Hey, anyone out there know where I can find a list of servers that provide adult content?
I have no intention of defederating or blocking any servers on the lit from QOTO itself. I do however want to provide the list to our new users so they have an easy way to block those domains on their personal accounts should they wish to make the timeline safe for work.
Thanks.

@freemo I had a mastadon account on a different instance years ago but abandoned it. The recent stuff reminded me why federation is important. Furthermore the UI, software, and terms of use on qoto are IMO much better than most instances I've seen.
While I don't agree with some of my friend's political views I don't like the idea of a huge group of people being censored. It bothered me when platforms like parlor became so popular among them instead of something open like mastodon so I (and probably many people in similar situations) have been encouraging them to find an instance they like and join it.
#QOTO is seeing a pretty big spike in new user signups this last week. Anyone know whats going on and what is causing the exodus this time? Is this all because all the social media decided to ban trump maybe? It is the only event of consequence I know of.
@trinsec IMO: It would be best to get away from android entirely. F-Droid is an improvement but most of what people consider android stops functioning (sometimes entirely depending on the device) when you remove the closed parts.
@mh Also: shortcuts can be automatically trigged daily and fetch things and check if they were updated that day via the HTTP headers, but shortcuts are absolutely terrible for programming and you can't distribute automations.
swiley.net
Email mastodon+swiley@swiley.net (this makes all of my computers beep and turn on an indicator light and is always the fastest way to reach me.) I was on octodon a while ago but abandoned my account. I've never been a member of gab or parlor.
If you’d like to learn to program I would consider the SICP [1] more or less the peak of American CS pedagogy (at least as far as beginners go) along with “The Practice of Programming” once you get through that.
I play ukulele, I’m ok at reading music and decent at improv. I learned from Walter Piston’s “Harmony” and some of Adam Neely’s videos.
My main phone is a pine phone so if I don’t pick up when you call the battery is probably dead, the modem is probably dead, or I’m currently swearing at calls/pulseaudio/alsa. I’d strongly recommend sending an email instead.
Dispite what my web page says I’ve stopped uploading my scratch projects to GitHub once I started to understand the basics of collaboration with git. I was using the flamegraph as gamification/motivation but it doesn’t work as well with feature branch/squash merge workflows so I just keep most things on my VPS until I’m happy with publishing updates.
