In the process of compiling data for the Atlas of Surveillance, we noticed a peculiar trend: college campuses are acquiring a surprising number of surveillance technologies. Here’s what we’ve found so far: https://www.eff.org/deeplinks/2021/03/scholars-under-surveillance-how-campus-police-use-high-tech-spy-students
@icedquinn Just buy a bag of PLL and XOr chips on Amazon.
@valleyforge At this point I've come to the conclusion that most of the authors of news articles are no different than the average blogger; they drool some opinion out onto their keyboard at 9:00 and say that everyone who disagrees with them is backwards because they're a professional.
@binyamin Latency (how long does a key press take to cause an action) is most important. also memory is more important than you might expect because many of these (slack in particular) are so fat they can evict things from memory which will make your machine slow enough to be unusable.
Also on windows machines I/O tends to be a premium because there's so much crap from both Microsoft and the OEM eating it so that's another good thing to watch.
Stuff like start up time is good to know but usually not too important.
@freemo There are a surprising number of PR images of women holding soldering iron tips.
@fatboy Guix being the obvious one to focus on.
@alejandrobdn Windows has this crazy pnp thing to make devices work that way and it's always blowing up. Instead on Linux you're expected to share driver source code and all the drivers for everything are lumped into the same code base. It sounds like something way too simple for how well it works.
This is why I don't think non-GPL OSes will ever be very popular, and even if they are the UX will be far worse.
@cadadr@mastodon.sdf.org I hate web crap as much as the next guy (probably a little more since I grew up in the rural US where bad internet is all you can get and most webdevs really don't think about what using their app in a situation like that does.)
But again, some of this sounds pretty silly on mastodon: a tool using the ActivityPub web standard that allows your social media to be silo free. Most of the web is also a far better alternative to the platforms Google and Apple are pushing on everyone.
@DeveloperMemes How do you not notice an Ubuntu VM in the background? Those are *huge* resource hogs.

Signal Appears To Have Abandoned Their AGPL-licensed Server Sourcecode

I never recommend Signal to anyone. And I regret I used to recommend it to other people before.
If anyone wants to try sxmo on Arch Arm then grab yourself a barebones image and setup your wifi with nmtui then grab this file github.com/justinesmithies/s… The code is a tad rough but it works for me. 😉 #pinephone
@thornAvery Oh wow that's a neat idea! I was thinking a turn based RPG where players could vote on PRs to the code would be neat but this really captures the fundamental idea which doesn't even need any code! I'd join as long as the turns aren't too short.
@MrMaxPowers247 Everyone keeps saying disposable masks are bad for the environment but I've gotten sick twice from reusable ones.
No call/sms forwarding, bad coverage, now this. I'd leave if I had them.
swiley.net
Email mastodon+swiley@swiley.net (this makes all of my computers beep and turn on an indicator light and is always the fastest way to reach me.) I was on octodon a while ago but abandoned my account. I've never been a member of gab or parlor.
If you’d like to learn to program I would consider the SICP [1] more or less the peak of American CS pedagogy (at least as far as beginners go) along with “The Practice of Programming” once you get through that.
I play ukulele, I’m ok at reading music and decent at improv. I learned from Walter Piston’s “Harmony” and some of Adam Neely’s videos.
My main phone is a pine phone so if I don’t pick up when you call the battery is probably dead, the modem is probably dead, or I’m currently swearing at calls/pulseaudio/alsa. I’d strongly recommend sending an email instead.
Dispite what my web page says I’ve stopped uploading my scratch projects to GitHub once I started to understand the basics of collaboration with git. I was using the flamegraph as gamification/motivation but it doesn’t work as well with feature branch/squash merge workflows so I just keep most things on my VPS until I’m happy with publishing updates.
