SF's board of supervisors has, at least for the moment, been convinced that allowing the cops to go around killing people with robots is a bad idea. abcnews.go.com/US/san-francisc

Excited about a new working paper introduce a new predictor of conspiracy belief - overconfidence. "Overconfidently conspiratorial: Conspiracy believers are dispositionally overconfident and massively overestimate how much others agree with them"

Check out Gord Pennycook's Tweet thread about it here twitter.com/GordPennycook/stat

And the paper itself here: psyarxiv.com/d5fz2

Hi mastodon! Here's our paper that came out today. We broke the record for the oldest ancient DNA, using sediment from northern greenland, and uncovered an entire boreal/arctic ecosystem! nature.com/articles/s41586-022

If you speak a #language other than English, and it has an expression equivalent to "swear like a ____", referring to a specific occupation like sailor, cart driver, etc., let me know! I've gathered a few examples, but the more data I get, the better. #linguistics #languages #swearing #profanity #research

Wendelstein 7-X broke yesterday its own record with the 100 s discharge duration and ca. 400 MJ total energy injected into plasma.

This infrared image shows almost no thermal loads to the first wall, i.e. plasma is well insulated from the surroundings, which is essential for a future reactor. We call such state of plasma - detachment. It allows for longer operation of the reactor.

With 100 s plasma duration this is probably a world record for the duration of the detachment. (C) IPP

We plan to reach 200 seconds by the end of this campaign with 1 GJ injected into the plasma.

High resolution scans of every single photo taken during the Apollo program is available on Flickr through NASA's "Project Apollo Archive."

I'm going to post the link but let me warn you right now it is very easy to lose a couple hours in there.

This was taken just 48 hours after we brought home Lexi our new Search and Rescue Puppy. We were a little worried that our older dog, Murphy, since departed 💔 , would not take to her as he was 8 at the time.

We had nothing to worry about.

I encourage anyone who participates in FOSS network infrastructure to ensure that you are working on consensus, user safety, and making time in your own maintenance to improve, update and share docs for how to recreate your service. Even better- actively try to onboard people. Yes - it is worth it to take the time to teach. Not every new contributor learns by just reading docs. Consider offering a video tutorial.

Ci, którzy mieli go najmniej wylądowali w więzieniu, na odwyku albo w grobie.

London in 1975, a glimpse into a lost world by David Granick. If you are a young photographer remember to photograph the ordinary things around you, the people, places and events we all take for granted. Eventually time will make those photographs extraordinary.
