Illegal because they show the humanity of those the Germans so despised. Photographs are clinical. Portraits show the pain.

Thank you, Franciszek Jaźwiecki, for showing the humanity. And the pain.

23 December 1900 | A Pole Franciszek Jaźwiecki was born in Cracow. A painter.

Auschwitz prisoner no. 79042.

He illegally created many portraits of co-prisoners at Auschwitz, Buchenwald, Sachsenhausen, and Gross-Rosen camps. He survived.

Among surviving documents, we can find his Auschwitz registration photograph as well as his self-portrait from Auschwitz.

Franciszek Jaźwiecki passed away in October 1946.

A related meme showing passenger train tracks, US versus EU.

Now that #Oslo’s sidewalks have become icy, while roads are kept fairly snow- and ice-free for cars, it’s that time of the year to remind people that #snow removal is very much a #feminist thing and prioritizing roads over sidewalks hurts women and benefits men. And yes, there is data to prove it (next toot):

This is how people are acting in the U.S. right now. Yes, it does get ridiculously super cold for like one or two days, but it used to be very cold for many days.

In 2017 I drove from Wisconsin to Missouri for the solar eclipse. As a very amateur sometimes-photographer who had never done anything like this before, I stacked all the ND filters I had, took a wild guess at shutter speed, and hoped for the best.

Whenever I happen back across this photo, I am astonished by how well it turned out. #astrophotography

I spent six years living in a falling apart hunting shack in northern Wisconsin with a living room window that overlooked Lake Superior.

One of my favorite things about being there was watching storms roll in across the lake.

Extremely lucky to get this shot by waiting for the lightning to start and repeatedly mashing the shutter button.

the worst part about being a vegetarian is having to read so many recipes that keep using verbiage like "deeply nourishing" and "restorative."

it's fucking lentil soup because I need dinner for my empty tummy, not to fill the existential hole in my being from an uncontemplated life.

nobody making brisket has to deal with this shit.

What I love about drone work is getting an angle that I otherwise cannot physically reach. Sometimes that's just a meters over the edge of a cliff, or sometimes it's 50m down the hill where there's no trail.

I bought some very nice variable ND filters for my Mavic Pro 2 which let me slow down the shutter, just like you normally would when shooting a waterfall.

So I shot some waterfalls too!

The situation regarding IT management in many schools is well-captured by the hypothetical (and sarcastic) Putt’s Law. According to Archibald Putt, “Technology is dominated by two types of people: those who understand what they do not manage and those who manage what they do not understand” (Putt, 2006, p. 7). Further, Putt articulated a corollary, “Every technical hierarchy, in time, develops a competence inversion” (p. 7). While these words are intended to be humorously cynical observations, they do describe the current state of IT management in schools:

• Technology professionals configure IT systems for students and teachers, but they are unfamiliar with emerging technology-rich pedagogy. In Putt’s terms, IT professionals are managing devices for purposes they do not understand.

• Educators complain about the IT systems in schools, but they don’t understand the complexity of managing IT systems, the potential conflicts and threats to the operation of enterprise IT, and general chaos that can result when enterprise networks are not tightly controlled. In Putt’s terms, educators seek to manage IT they do not understand.

• School leaders make budget and personnel decisions that impose unrealistic limits on IT professionals and they advocate for practices beyond the capacity of the available IT or are contrary to the professional tendencies of the teachers.

Bruno inspecting the . We have thaw and snow is slowly melting but at temperatures around 4°C it will take many days before it disappears.

Wild that these rocks were originally laid down as sediments at the bottom of a huge ocean which separated the landmasses now known as Scotland & England.. but then continental collision took place, the Iapetus closed & over 400 million years later we’re stuck with the tories 🙃

My small city is discussing the possibility of discussing (yes you read that correctly) updating a toothless tree bylaw that was last looked at in the 1990s.

Meanwhile in England: “Illegal tree felling in England will be punishable by unlimited fines and prison sentences from 1 January, the government has announced.”

Happy belated #winter #solstice. A time when light is both promise and magic and we often stop and appreciate the complexity of snow and ice, some years more than others. Respect for the #cryosphere is respect for our #Climate.

Sometimes I still do translations. Usually I to Polish but today I translated this piece about a fantastic truck with a fantastic history into English for you to read on the 40ton.net portal today:

Look at me, I am useful! :-)

At age 47 - statistically the unhappiest year of life, by some studies - I'm psychologically struggling with the fact that I've somehow spent my life in a journalism industry where a story about the world's largest investment firm helping companies hide carbon emissions cannot compete for attention with whatever the hell happens to be trending on a billionaire's microblogging site.

Tips on how to deal with a Midwest winter I have learned so far:
• raise your wipers so they don’t freeze to the windshield, I think?
• gloves with fingertips that work with smartphones (but the touch accuracy is hilarious)
• “it’s not good for the environment, but it works” (haven’t tried it yet)
