A Thai supermarket that replaced plastic packaging for Banana leaves

This is unusually explicit. "Democratic legislation is making things better for Americans. We need Republicans to stop it."

Sounds like hell on Earth, we've gotta stop this politico.com/news/2022/12/29/d

My mother, a refugee from the Great Flood, had one possession from her childhood. It was a pale blue vase with a tapered #neck. She kept it full of whatever caught her eye: scraggily wildflowers, winter greenery, drying grasses.

A vase is a fragile treasure though, and this one shattered during one of my family's rushed moves.

For a week my father glued the pieces back together, one piece each night.

When he was finished, you could see cracks, but it held water.

It's OK to refer to T-Shirts by their long names, Tyrannosaurus Shirts. Short arms, you know.

someone once asked me why i was so worried about the environment

i just said "i live there"

and they looked at me as if that fact had never once occurred to them

40 years ago today (1’st January 1983) was transition day for the #ARPANET. So started TCP/IP and UDP for that matter, as its full time networking protocol. The Internet was born. Here’s my transition workbook from 1982 which I still have in my possession. I wrote a lot of code based on that book. (FYI: picture is from ten years ago - I had less gray/grey hair)

As one mass hysteria is running out of steam, politicians and cops are searching for new, sexier, mass hysterias to profit from and help them keep their power. maggiemcneill.com/2022/12/31/n

Washington Post's MENSA chapter asked its members to choose one word from Webster’s; replace one letter, and then provide a new definition to it. These are the top winners.

A large number of space enthusiasts don't actually understand what constitutes an "orbit"

Almost like a Rage Against the Machine fan complaining about "too much politics", not knowing what the machine is

On of the most important things your programs must do is to allocate the memory they need and *deallocate* it when no longer needed. This is now usually automated. Even more critical, and not yet automated, is counting bay leaves and allspice berries you put in your food, so you can remove them all before further processing. If you miscount them your meal might crash.

I really hope 2023 is the year of the weird and chaotic nude bear (comic by Lukey McGarry)

Dark, wet, and gloomy, like proper should be. Spot the dog. No, her name is not Spot. It's Masza.

Post, the new platform, has a major problem.
It’s trying to build a monopoly on news payments. It looks like it’s aiming to be the “Uber of news.”

Do we really want to do that?? (No. )

New from me, on Substack.

Let’s skip Post. It’s not going to be good for users, news outlets, or democracy. Mastodon is a better choice.

#Poet Nanao Sakaki was born 100 years ago. As a teenager, he saw the plane that dropped the A-bomb on #Nagasaki on his radar screen and became a life-long peace activist.

A #Zen Buddhist, he befriended #BeatGeneration poets like Gary Snyder and Allen Ginsberg. I once took a pee with Nanao, Ginsberg, and Snyder under a full moon thinking of Lew Welch's line, "So it's all come to this."

His poem "Break the Mirror" is excellent advice regarding the ego for the new year.
