TIL there's a technical name for why ideas happen in the shower: the "default mode network" is a pattern of brain activity, measurable using fMRI, that happens when we're unfocussed. When the brain goes into idle mode (reduced activity), this part of the brain actually becomes *more* active. What does the default mode network do? Research is ongoing, but part of it definitely seems to be making connections, which is associated with curiosity and creativity.

What you see on this photo is not from the Empire Strikes Back.

No, it is German police protecting a coal mine excavator in #Lützerath - a village planned to be demolished by the energy company RWE to extract coal that is not even needed for the energy security of Germany.

On #scienceTwitter, my favourite thing were reading and, on rare occasions, writing "paper/preprint threads". From the researchers I followed and through the #Twitter algorithm, this became my most important source for new #research.

While people start to do the same on #Mastodon, I have the feeling that I miss important work bc no algorithm "saves" it for me if I don't watch my timeline constantly.

Two simple solutions would be: a commonly accepted hashtag that everybody uses when writing "paper threads" or a [...] @ a.gup.pe group with a similar adaptation rate.

#Question 1: is there already a mechanism for this that I missed?
#Question 2: What hashtag or group name?
I saw #TootPrint before. Maybe #PaperInAToot? #PaperInAPost? #PaperInAThread? #PaperPost? #MastoPrint?

Suggestions and boosts, please, we need reach for this! 🤓

Unethical hunting

A local hunter just called me in the middle of the night to tell me that a few days ago a group of hunters butchered a drove of wild boars, including piglets. He was almost crying. No decent hunter would shoot piglets. The bastards who did it are rich and have political connections.

Also, a good lesson from these Cold War-era docs is: if you’re a spy, the service you’re working for may not be the one you’re actually being paid by.

The loss of global sea-ice is a real-time planetary catastrophe unfolding right now.

As of January 1, 2023:

Arctic: 4th lowest extent.
Antarctic: 1st lowest extent.
Global: 1st lowest extent.

Did I publish this here? I have no idea how to use this platform. But, this is pretty amazing -- the average deviation of each date from the average sea-ice extent for that day in the Arctic, 1978-2022. The picture is tragic and beautiful.

With photo now .. Sorry Tooters😞
One of the most impressive journeys I have ever made was a trip to South Africa, Botswana and Zimbabwe. I went for the Big 5, but no animal showed a more arrogant attitude than this #CapeVulture... Afraid of nothing.
It was enormous in size and silently and motionlessly guarded its fellow vultures as they fed on a dead hippopotamus.

The further we stray from God's light, the more we realize we really did only need IRC.

Researching mines in northern Spain I came across this curious object. It's a canary cage designed to keep the canary alive in the event of a gas leak. If a miner saw the canary laying at the bottom of the cage it was time to abandon everything and leave the mine, but not without first closing the latched glass door and opening the valve of the oxygen bottle to save the bird. A miner would do that on their way out and take the bird with them. It's a signifier of the miner's legendary sense of solidarity, no lives lost to the mine on a miners watch. A solidarity that was also crucial in the fight for workers rights, creating safer and more humane working conditions, achievements of unionization and solidarity that some of us still enjoy today.

“In #Finland, the number of homeless people has fallen sharply. Those affected receive a small apartment and counselling with no preconditions. 4 out of 5 people affected make their way back into a stable life. And all this is CHEAPER than accepting homelessness.”

Make sure everyone understands this — It’s costing us far too much to NOT provide housing and supports to those who are homeless.

An AI test from 1971 shows you need to adjust your #ChatGPT expectations.

In 1971, Terry Winograd devised the Winograd Schemas, simple sentence understanding tasks that require the use of knowledge and commonsense reasoning. Humans understand them easily. ChatGPT... not so much.

Today’s bog word of the day is paludification. From (Latin) palūs meaning marsh or swamp + ficātus to make. Most global peatland area is due to paludification where wetland plants & peat spread into adjacent uplands. Image shows paludifying Sphagnum moss on upland mineral soils. #mosstodon #lichen
