Why we should NOT use Impact Factor to evaluate individual researchers:

1. It discourages scholars (especially early-career ones) from working in novel, risky areas, where there are fewer people who could cite their work.

2. A journal’s IF may be ramped up by a small number of highly cited papers. This does NOT mean that each paper in this journal will be highly cited.

Don’t take this from me, take it from the editors of “Nature” and “Science”: science.org/doi/10.1126/scienc, nature.com/articles/nature.201

Did you ever edit and retoot just because of a minor error in the alt text?

i was laid-off twice early in my career in very large reorgs / cost-cutting.

the thing that wld have been helpful for me to hear then was 'this is not abt you. you were a number on someone's spreadsheet. they wanted that number to go down by 1000 or 2000 or 10,000'.

so, to anyone who needs to hear that today:

it's not abt you. you did nothing wrong.

They found a policing approach that works! Is it harsher enforcement? Zero tolerance? Throwing more people in jail? Bigger military-style weapons? More macho bullshit?

No.

Watched the latest season of #Shetland. I’m still mad about the librarian who just freely shared information about who signed out what books, and also didn’t purge outdated books from their collection. Do better, fictional #librarian!

(I don’t actually know UK librarian rules for the first one, but all my librarian friends are fanatical about patrons’ privacy, so it feels like it’s a standard thing.)

The Press are noticing that former Twitter developers are migrating to Mastodon.

What should raise eyebrows is: Ivory might be "better than Tweetbot ever could be".

This isn't mere hype.

Tweetbot was rolled out in 2011, when Twitter clients were already constrained by API limitations.

However, with Mastodon, Tapbots isn't constrained whatsoever by a proprietary API.

With open protocols, the sky is the limit in how they can innovate!

Twitter ain't limiting them!

"On the face of it, shareholder value is the dumbest idea in the world,” he said. “Shareholder value is a result, not a strategy . . . Your main constituencies are your employees, your customers and your products." - Jack Welch.

Once you've let somebody else define your success metrics, you've lost. You can no longer lead or drive meaningful change. You're reduced to turning the crank on the machinery.

All these huge orgs, hamstringing themselves, genuflecting to the dumbest idea in the world.
