New: we proved it could be done. I used an AI replica of my voice to break into my bank account. The AI tricked the bank into thinking it was talking to me. Could access my balances, transactions, etc. Shatters the idea that voice biometrics are foolproof vice.com/en/article/dy7axa/how

One of the reasons I don't use Content Warnings much outside of replies to other people that are already using them is that I largely think that most of my thoughts & ideas probably qualify for content warnings.

So at that point it's pretty clear that anyone who follows me knows what they're getting into.

Plus my instance counts warnings for character count when the limit is already annoyingly low.

People are already saying "using #ChatGPT is so much easier than Google!"

In 2020 we had to re-train people to wash hands. Now, it's time to review the concept of "garbage in, garbage out"... 🤦‍♀️

I absolutely love Chats With The Void but don't use Insta so have to catch up in batches. Skullbird posts at instagram.com/chatsvoid.

Here's one of my favourites anyway, and if you can relate to self doubt and deep issues you may find their comics consoling.

My wife was away last night, so of course I ended up writing kernel patches. Don't tell me I don't know how to have a good time.

For those calling for defederation of the .UA (Ukrainian) instances, know this:

Today is the anniversary of the war, and they have been experiencing Russian intel ops against their servers... moreover today than normal.

They are banning these accounts when they reveal themselves, but they are also in areas where power may not be consistent. They deserve more grace right now than most ever do.

This is another one of those stories that sounds hearwarming at first, but then you realize that the fact that this is necessary is an outrage.

Broadband service used to be considered a luxury, but is now as vital as any public utility.

Add to that the fact that cable industry lobbyists have managed to make coops like this illegal in most of the country. All the power to Devin for helping low income people access the basic tools of survival in the modern age.

This young network engineer and the nonprofit org he works for - Project Waves - are doing amazing things in Baltimore

My story here on how Devin Weaver designed, built, and operates a #communitybroadband network that brings free gig speed #Internet service to low-income apartment buildings in one of the nation's most disconnected cities

The trolley problem: your imagination versus the even sadder reality. (Just got this from a friend who also collects trolley problem variants.)

Bank Vole.

It was so funny to watch these voles scurrying off with the hazelnuts, as the voles themselves pretty much blended in with the woodland floor, but you could see this hazelnut zipping along through the undergrowth!

The Paradox of Tolerance disappears if you look at tolerance, not as a moral standard, but as a social contract.

If someone does not abide by the terms of the contract, then they are not covered by it.

In other words: The intolerant are not following the rules of the social contract of mutual tolerance.

Since they have broken the terms of the contract, they are no longer covered by the contract, and their intolerance should NOT be tolerated.

[inspired by “Tolerance is not a moral precept”]

The soils of are so rich in minerals that the main agricultural produce grown here is rocks.

1. We got 5” of snow last night.
2. The skies are blue today.
3. The cat is sharing the sofa with me.

Drag being banned in an entire state has me genuinely terrified for my life. At what point do I actually need to seek political asylum somewhere?

Time to start something new in my part of the forest. This means I have to learn a lot of things, like / . And soldering.

Damn. I overcooked the noodles. Didn't realize the recipe had imperial seconds instead of metric seconds.

Fortunately someone built a 12 metre lamppost in the middle of a nice nowhere surrounded by beautiful forests. We've added some 5 metres and now get stable 50/5 Mbps, which is an improvement over the previous unstable 3/0.5 Mbps.

I taught IT design classes starting 40 years ago, in which a "key" point was "never use personal information in database keys because it can change". Even relatively stable things like government ID #s.

I guess I shouldn't have retired.
