If your city couldn’t avoid making a massive city-damaging mistake in the first place, do the next best thing — remove the mistake, and repair your city. Like #Utrecht, Netherlands did with its central area river, then freeway, then river again.

Old coal mine infrastructure & machinery left abandoned in forest. Rusting away. Nature is reclaiming. Mosses, ferns, fungi & plants are growing in/on/around the left behind equipment.

“The reason most public transportation is seen as ‘losing’ money is precisely because it charges for trips. If you don't charge fares, suddenly it can't ‘lose’ money. It just costs money, the same as the roads.”

This random comment has given me my new favourite argument for removing fares from public transit.

from the linguistic silliness tgat brought us trash panda, and danger noodle:

so every time russian trolls hit an ukrainian open-registration mastodon instance, the fediblock gets lit.

first come the outraged that demand the instance gets immediately defederated or else, because they host nazis.

second come those with good advice. “i encourage you to do x, y and z, all of which will limit the accessibility if the service to your fellow people, but will make everything so much more convenient to us

third come those who offer to help: moderate the instances in the hours when the shelling and bombardments make it impossible for the admins to log in, or screen the join requests.

lol, the last para was just a joke. no-one on the fediblock cares, and after all, no-one speaks ukrainian or whatever is the language there.

fediblock: keeping the fediverse clean for those who speak majority languages.

@dandelion we have it in mycology too. LBM is little brown mushroom, notoriously hard to ID so just LBM.

Just an LBB* borbing around...

*Little Brown Bird (a technical term I learned from our local herpetologists). I'm no good at identifying LBBs, but this might be a Harris's Sparrow braving the icy February wind.

What nonsense! I find the students sleep perfectly well during my early-morning lectures.

@alexwild I had each of my four high school Entomology classes record the number of wasp exit holes in oak apple galls, and volume (mL) by displacement of water, and it was a lot of fun to plot those. We were surprised to learn that the largest galls didn't have the most exit holes, it was more of the mid-size ones. Further, we did have galls with zero exit holes, which was sad.

Found this parasitic Ormyrus wasp yesterday. She was drilling into a live oak gall to drop an egg into the cynipid wasp inside.

All this drama going on out in the yard, unseen.

I never bother with an alarm; I just make sure to give the cat his supper 8 hours before I need to be up ;)
