'Live free and die'? The sad state of U.S. life expectancy

Life expectancy continues to decline in the U.S. as it rebounds in other countries

HPV vax is not just for girls. For boys, it protects against head & neck, anal, and penile cancers. Also protects the girls in their lives against cervical, vaginal & vulvar cancers. A vaccine against cancer was always the dream. As soon as my boy is eligible, I'm lining him up.

My hubby snapped this photo of a moose just chowing down on a tree in front of a local bookstore. The owner of the bookstore won't be too happy, though.

I wonder if people using mastodon know that, without section 230, no one could legally afford to run a mastodon instance. Section 230 protects what we do here every day. Politicians threatening 230 are threatening free speech on the internet.

It appears a lot of people don't understand the implications of laws like Utah's -- which will extend beyond the state, and be copied by many other states -- involving limits on children accessing social media. In order to prevent children from creating social media accounts by themselves, it is required that *ALL* users of social media be identified via government IDs. This is literally the beginning of Chinese-style control and tracking of ALL Internet usage here in the U.S. Nothing less.

It may help to think of ChatGPT as bullshitting-as-a-service. So if your job involves bullshitting—political speechwriters, enterprise software marketing copywriters—then GPT is coming for you!

some people say that Jesus' real miracle was having 12 close friends in his 30s, but the sad truth is that they hang out with him only because of who his dad was

#academic #scientificdata We have loads of data around the lab. It's challenging knowing who has what where. Is there some (#freesoftware, #Python preferred) tool so that we can organise this? Should allow listing and querying metadata and hopefully, retrieving stuff via web. Chaos of formats including geospatial as well as CSV etc @pybonacci

Amazing how many brilliant scientists will look at an LLM "passing" a standardized test and think, "wow, this computer is very smart" and not "standardized tests are very bad at measuring intelligence"

This is Michelangelo's statue David, created 1501/1504. It is one of the most famous statues in the world. Including images of this statue in art classes is now banned in one school district in Florida because a parent complained that the statue is pornographic.I thought conservatives insisted that our history (especially statues) shouldn't be forgotten.
P.S., I refuse to mark this as 'sensitive.'
