It takes FRANTIC diplomacy on the part of Churchill and the British Foreign Office to prevent the US from invading the Azores.
The Azores are key to the war in Europe,. the Americans insist. They're in bombing range of America. They cover the Atlantic air gap. They control the undersea cables.
Control them, you win the Battle of the Atlantic.
WE KNOW Say the British.
So please stop trying to fuck this up for us. /10
Pietruszka is deliberating jumping down on that pile of fluff under the tree, her uncle Bruno.
Moro, the guardian of the well. You don't want to see her using that stick to drive away water thieves.
Beautiful tribute to a pioneer.

Researchers pored over satellite imagery to create one of the most comprehensive data sets on the global mining footprint ever generated.
The data set maps out in fine detail the boundaries of a combined 65,585 km2 (25,323 mi2) of mining sites across the world.
Nearly 10% of the total mining areas mapped in the study fell inside protected areas like national parks, Ramsar wetlands and UNESCO World Heritage Sites.

I disagree with "hide features from newbies and they'll discover it when they're ready".
No, they won't.
I've worked in the tech support trenches. I know how this goes.
People use software to do what they believe is apparent and obvious to them but is, in actuality, an edge case use.
And then when they discover your software can do it but it's been hidden from them for years due to a silly "KISS" philosophy, they get pissed.
Fortunately the bug report contains a link to another issue on a different bug tracker (Gitlab).
Surely *that* will have a timestamp...
*clicks*
Arrgh!
Ah - but if you mouseover on that text (something I only did accidentally), it gives me an actual timestamp.
I suppose it could be worse...
"When the last light of Durin's day fell on your monitor in the Year of Our Sandwich and the thrush knocked thrice..."
Just ... show the real date & time please? ISO8601 would be fine.
I will never stop thinking about this graph and the suffering—the needless, culturally-exacted human suffering—it encodes: the history of left-handedness among Americans
It's hard for people to visualize removing tons or billions of tons of carbon dioxide (CO₂). I propose we talk about CO₂ removal (#CDR) like a time machine (e.g., this machine will take us back 5 minutes). For example:
Q: How far back in time does planting 100 million trees take us?
A: If one mature tree takes up an average of 25 kg of CO₂ per year, then 100 million trees will take up 2.5 MtCO₂. That's a time machine that takes us back 33 minutes and 6 seconds in a year. It's not a lot.
