Facebook content moderators call the work they do 'torture.' Their lawsuit may ripple worldwide | Euronews

>Eight hours a day, his job as a content moderator for a Facebook contractor required him to look at horrors so the world wouldn’t have to. Some overwhelmed colleagues would scream or cry, he said.

Ad blockers are also cybersecurity. Say it with me.

They reduce malvertising, watering hole attacks, and general malicious script execution. It’s not all about you, ad firms.

Rigging the non-algorithm - a 🧵

Much is made of how "you are the algorithm" on Mastodon, and it's generally true if you mean solely what you see on your feed.
But there are other algorithms in play here. They indirectly influence what appears on your feed, and they can be rigged.
Take trends. It's available under the Explore/Search tab and produces a list of popular posts. (This is about posts, not hashtags.)
Considering that an algorithm is merely instructions on how to complete a task, it's worth looking at how this "popularity algorithm" is populated.
The documentation at mastodon.org tells you how "trends" are decided.
There's a lot of ways users can opt-out of the process, such as adjusting the visibility of their posts, but I'm going to focus on a bog-standard public post.
Under "Status", the popularity algorithm looks at "publication time/date", with likes and boosts as allegedly optional aspects.
If your algorithm is designed to measure how popular a post is, however, the numbers of likes and boosts are included. Those are very basic metrics of "popularity".

Does anyone else talk to their dog in a James Cagney voice, or am I just an eccentric old lady?

"Lata mówienia, żeby nie zabezpieczać załączników PESELem nie poszły na marne" 🙃

Apropos of nothing in particular, but there’s only 17 shopping days left until Bastille Day.

@TexasObserver @gusbova The problem is Ascension - they just sold the hospital they ran here that they just bought some 2 years ago. They had so many MDs, nurses and staff quit on them that they were in danger of going tits up. So they decided it would be easier to run away than actually treat their staff with an ounce of respect.

Koniec dnia. W porównaniu do wczoraj dziś była piękna pogoda. Pora spać 🌄

Moje prywatne krucjaty:

1. Atom w Polsce - przynajmniej 3 elektrownie. Już!

2. Krypto do piachu.

In 1994, several of us got together around a pretty neat idea.

We liked DOS, but Microsoft was clearly moving completely to Windows. "The next version of Windows," they said, "would do away with DOS."

We wanted to keep DOS around, so we decided to write our own. That project, announced 29 years ago TODAY on June 29 1994, was the FreeDOS Project.

Thanks to EVERYONE who has been part of FreeDOS! 29 years is a long time for any open source project, and I'm looking forward to more years to come.

Mój mały projekt Nomad Offgrid działa już 2 tygodnie!

Tak, od 2 tygodni nie ładowałem telefonów, tabletu i 2 laptopów inaczej jak tylko energią elektryczną pozyskaną ze słońca.... #offgrid #solar #solarpower #energiazeslonca #fotowoltaika #NomadOffgrid bin.pol.social/m/NomadOffgrid/
