Więc mówisz, że kiedyś w komiksach nie było polityki (i tego całego woke)? [Epizod 27]

A pamiętasz, jak w 1964 roku (no... w czasie II wojny światowej) do zróżnicowanego etnicznie oddziału Howling Commandos dołączył na jedną misję rasista, któremu Nick Fury w żołnierskich słowach wyjaśnił, co sądzi o takich, jak on?

"Sgt. Fury and His Howling Commandos", vol. 1, nr 6, Marvel Comics

"The Fangs of the Desert Fox!", scen. Stan Lee, rys. Jack Kirby.

The fact that far too many people cannot recognize fascism unless it looks exactly like Nazi Germany is very dangerous.

In my dream just before I woke up this morning, I was attempting to rescue an injured beaver from a boulevard center. Couldn't decide how to pick him up without getting bit. Was joined by a 2nd beaver and then 2 dogs who got distracted by a skunk. Then an antlerless moose appeared and started to attack me. I was trying to roll into the nearby underbrush to escape when I woke up.

A system failure I predicted some two years ago finally occurred.

A couple of years ago we got our official house number from the local government. It was not what I expected. Our house is near number 1. I expected to get 1A. I asked for more – I wanted 0, but I knew that would fuck up the whole government geographical software system. 1A would have been fine, though not as sexy.

What we got was 3. It was recycled. Before we built our house there was a ruin, hidden under vegetation, that had number 3. It's 700 metres away from us. If I hadn't looked on the geodesic maps, I wouldn't have known about it.

So a few days ago something we expected didn't get delivered. No such place.

We're not monsters – we don't want our delivery people to drive 6 kilometres over a ruined dirt road . They know they can drop off our stuff in the small store in a nearby village. A few years ago I had a fight about this with one of our neighbours. He was mad at me for not forcing delivery people to drive to our house. He said we were spoiling them. Fuck the spoiled bastard.

But this time it was a temp doing the delivery, and they tried their best. Which means using Google Maps. Which totally suck in our area (yes we put in a ticket today, no idea how soon Google will fix this). But they didn't call us.

OSM has two entries for number 3 in our village. One is nine years old and wrong. The other is one year old and correct.. Fortunately no one here, except for me, uses OSM. I tried editing OSM years ago and got burned – despite my best efforts (than included buying a stand-alone GPS) my edit was rejected.

We will have to wait a couple of days now for whatever was coming to us. Today the regular delivery person dropped off something else at the village store. The system is working again. But now I think that any government, local or not, that carelessly reuses unique identifiers, should be defenestrated ASAP.

Besides doing a bunch of useless research on the motion of planets, Kepler did some practical work on the volume of wine barrels. The story is interesting! Roberto Cardil writes:

"Kepler had several children before his first wife died. In 1613, he married for the second time in a celebration in Linz, Austria. Kepler bought a barrel of wine for the wedding but questioned the method the wine merchant used to measure the volume of the barrel and thus determine the price. In consequence, afterwards Kepler set out both to determine the correct volume of a wine barrel or cask, and to find the proportions that optimize the volume of such a barrel."

To determine the volume of a wine barrel, Kepler thought of any solid body as made up of thin layers, took the sum of the volumes of these layers, and then took a kind of limit where the thickness of these layers became infinitesimal.

Otto Toeplitz wrote:

"Working out finer approximations of various barrel shapes, Kepler consulted Archimedes and discovered that his own method of indivisibles had enabled him to obtain results in a far simpler and more general way than Archimedes, who had been struggling with cumbersome and difficult proofs. What he did not suspect was that Archimedes, too, had found his results by the same method of indivisibles (for his book The Method was lost until 1906!)."

I guess these "indivisibles" are like "infinitesimals".

For more, read this:

Roberto Cardil, Kepler: The Volume of a Wine Barrel, maa.org/press/periodicals/conv

The "optimization" problem is not quite clearly explained here, but it seems to be maximizing the volume of a barrel while keeping its volume as measured by the wine merchant constant! 😈

If you're new to Mastodon, know that you don't get your tusks until one of the longtime natives scolds you for not putting your stuff behind a content warning, and your response sets off an old-school flame war that defederates at least three instances.

@szescstopni Apparently, I've been mistaken. According to wielkahistoria.pl/zniewazenie-, the Penal Code from 1932 had a rule about insulting the head of foreign state (article 111).

I am sorry to those who came over here with me in November in the hope and expectation that a good chunk of legal Twitter would also come.

Sadly most of the accounts I recommended as they came over then are now fairly quiet on here - many not having posted since December/January.

Am looking out for other legal accounts to recommend - and if you know of any, do let me know.

Any area of law, any jurisdiction.

Protip:

When designing a user interface, imagine some old woman using it, say Margaret Hamilton, and she's clicking your app's buttons and saying to you, as old people do,

"Young whippersnapper, when I was your age, I sent 24 people to the ACTUAL MOON with my software in 4K of RAM and here I am clicking your button and it takes ten seconds to load a 50 megabyte video ad and then it crashes

I'm not even ANGRY with you, I'm just disappointed."

@liztai We should all stop paying corporations as much as possible.

Fuck their AI, fuck their copyright, for their "intellectual property".

Paywalls are just an attempt at enclosing any and all remaining commons & public goods for mass #enshittification and value extraction.

@szescstopni That regulation is much older. It has been established in the communist age. I guess, with the intention of discouraging people from insulting leaders of Soviet Union.

Polish law is weird (like all law systems). If you insult Putin in Poland, you can go to prison for up to three years. That's because there's a law on insulting heads of foreign states. Apparently it was introduced to prevent insulting John Paul II, a pope, though I can't find any reliable sources for that at the moment.
