TIL there was no single burning of the historic Great Library of Alexandria. The “single burning” story is just myth.

Instead, the Library of Alexandria was slowly defunded and its librarians, intellectuals purged from Alexandria. Over generations its prominence and scholarship slowly faded away, and the collection was likely slowly lost to corruption, war, plunder, dilapidation, or dispersed across other private and public collections.

Do you know librarians who have created Mastodon instances?

A librarian at my institution is interested in advocating for creating one. It might be helpful to read about other librarians' experiences doing this or the existence of some other cases managed by libraries.

History is weird because one day you’re assisting in the invention of the most dangerous weapon ever created and then 80 years later your name is forever associated with a popular line of dolls because of a coincidental movie release schedule.

It's my birthday. I've seen people I know and like post messages for their own days suggesting a charity to give as a celebration. I thought about that, and I honestly don't have one in particular.

What I really want is this: Put a few dollars (or local currency) in your pocket, and next time someone asks for money, give it to them. No questions, no philosophizing about systems vs individual action. Certainly no weird moralizing. Just give it to them. That would be an excellent present for me.

Trump will benefit from incarceration in Florida because it will teach him useful skills.

I was just served an ad about a new web shopping site.

It claims to be a "new shopping addiction" and features a t-shirt with writing:
> 5 Things You Should Know About My Wife
1 She is my Queen.
2. She is a bit crazy and scares
me sometimes.
3. She can't control her mouth.
4. She has anger issues
5. Mess with her and they'Il never find your body

Clearly, Amazon created this ad to make sure I never, ever visit the site.

I hear the government is doing IoT cybersecurity labels? They're welcome to reuse mine from a while back.

Without going into too much detail, my thesis was criticised for developing a web service with C++. I It was questioned why I didn't use #NodeJS or #Java for the web service. "It's not performance critical" said the professor.

Dude, have you used the internet lately?

EVERYTHING is performance critical!

This sort of teaching explains why most aps/websites run like absolute dogshit.

Why is #performance never an academic criteria?

I wish @cmuratori could see this...

I'm trying to locate a behavioral economics paper I read 10+ years ago, about art posters: one group was told to rank the posters by preference, the other to explain their preferences, and then they got to keep their top pick. Ring any bells?

@TechnicallyRon@Twitter.com:

"I took 1 star reviews of #Barbie from furious men on letterboxd and put them on the posters because it makes the film seem ever cooler."

That last one has to be a guy who doesn't understand why he is so attracted to the Kens.

fedigang, what's the *worst* response to cookie disclosure laws you've seen a website implement?

trophy so far for me goes to Healthline dot com, where you can click through to a separate page to disable all cookies (already cheeky 😡), but if you choose to disable cookies then the whole site redirects to a minisite with a fixed selection of 10 articles

Community-driven projects - "This doesn't work on my system." "Let's see if we can figure that out in spite of the fact that I've never used that system before and your hardware has almost no documentation with official support discontinued years ago. Have you tried...?"

Corporate-driven projects - "This doesn't work on my system." "Your system is unsupported. Issue closed."

@rysiek wizards and witches always get blamed by clergy and royals when their plans fail. the common folk between need educated this time around so we avoid the fire-pit.

👉 #Hackers had been warning about IoT (in)security for years.
👉 Hackers had been raising alarm about phone network insecurity for almost two decades.
👉 Hackers had been insisting, since 1990's, that any entity that gathers personal information protects it well.

But sure, blame everything on hackers:
- "hackers break into <some IoT boondoggle>"
- "hackers abuse SMS to break into <a service>"
- "hackers leak <some entity's ridiculously badly protected> data." 🤦‍♀️

Because clicks must flow. 🙄

Say it with me: #PangeaWasRight
True liberation and abolishment of all borders can only come through the abolishment of all physical borders as well. We need to re-establish the one-continent earth for a united humankind.

@danhon people often forget that when you hire a professional, you’re not *really* paying for an hour of their time.

You’re paying for all of the experience that means the task *only* takes an hour of their time.
