Deposits on cans got introduced a few months ago in this country to eliminate littering.

The result?
Trash bins are ripped open in search for cans with a deposit on them, causing more littering.

Mozilla should call for a vote on the removal of Google from the W3C over the implementation of Web Environment Integrity. "But Chrome has 65% market share, what good is the W3C without them?” If Google can take unilateral action to fundamentally change the basic principles of the web, then the W3C is *already* useless. This will give Google a clear choice: if they want to maintain the idea that the W3C matters, they should withdraw this implementation.

@MarcAbrahams They're replacing libraries with jails for naughty children. Yikes.

Fun little thing about #Mastodon. I've spent time as a #Wikipedia admin, and I know other Wikipedians are nodding their heads and chuckling because it's such a part of Wikipedia culture that they already know what I'm about to talk about.

Collaborative editing on Wikipedia is supposed to follow standards of civility. The uncivil behavior that I used to see on Wikipedia sometimes is pretty much the norm on #Twitter. What's ironic and funny about it is that there is a long-standing (unofficial) community mantra on Wikipedia known as "No Angry Mastodons." We (people) are hard-wired with fight-or-flight responses and, when confronted, either dig in and become super defensive, or we just check ourselves out of the situation and skedaddle. It's an evolutionary response to stress, because it helped us defeat and/or escape from predators in prehistoric times.

The idea behind No Angry Mastodons is that our fight-or-flight response is misplaced on the internet. On Wikipedia, there are "no angry mastodons" that are going to come after us. We don't have to worry about getting squished by prehistoric pachyderms. The TL;DR of No Angry Mastodons is that there is nothing that happens online that is worth subjecting yourself the stress of facing down an Angry Mastodon - there aren't any, so just chill.

Almost a month ago, the vet told me Happy, at 13.5yrs, was nearing liver failure. It was almost certainly cancer based on her bloodwork.

Here she is today, after many more vet visits, an overnight in the ER & 4 meds. Turns out it was a bacterial infection. She’s recovering & I highly recommend pet insurance.

I’m so grateful for more time with this very good girl. I also know that matter how many years we’re fortunate to have with our dogs & cats, it’s never going to be enough. #DogsOfMastodon

Maternal mortality rates are out of control in #Texas, and the U.S. in general: For every Dutch mother who dies, 50 #Black American mothers die.

It doesn't have to be this way. In the new Eye on Texas column, an experienced midwife explains: texasobserver.org/texas-matern

If you've caught your Roomba trying to plug itself into a USB port on your computer to access the Home and Garden channel: press 8.
If your Roomba has fused with your microwave: hang up the phone, grab your belongings and get the fuck out.

It's interesting that younger people all believe the web is some kind of permanent record, probably due to indoctrination about drunk teenage photos on FB making corporations refuse you for a shitty job. I've always just assumed things on the internet are more likely to disappear for all kinds of reasons that are pretty obvious if you know anything about the history of things that survive long periods. Computers and servers die, they require electricity to even be useful, and technology is constantly updated so older formats no longer work. These are all issues that art curators have been dealing with since at least the time of VHS (along with issues of infinite replication), though preserving wax cylinders and paintings done in acrylics or using large amount of oil paints also makes an appearance in terms of curation and longevity.

July has already seen:

The hottest three-week period ever recorded.

The three hottest days on record.

The highest-ever ocean temperatures for this time of year.

It is still possible to avoid the very worst of climate change, but only with dramatic, immediate #ClimateAction.
