I am shocked — shocked! — to hear that the thing that people had initially warned would happen and Be Very Bad, and the company responsible for the thing had dismissed at the time, as it obviously took every precaution and Treats the Risks Seriously, just happened and turned out to Be Very Bad. 🙄

Huh? What DNA data? I am talking about the huge farmed salmon escape from off-shore salmon farms in #Iceland, currently completely screwing up the local salmon population and the river ecosystems. 👀

He gives proper credit to the photographers, sometimes going through rabbit holes of internet searches to find the correct name to credit.

He also writes detailed alt-text to describe the photos he picks. He cares deeply about accessibility and helping others learn about cool animals!!

In hotels I often make up my name, adress and birthdate when they ask for it. Because I don’t trust their IT security.
Some people laugh at me for that - they think it's paranoia. But a few days ago 6 TB of data from the big European hotel chain #MotelOne was leaked by a ransomware group - including millions of customer names and dates. So maybe it’s not paranoia not to give your real data to hotels. (The same counts for online shops, gyms and many other institutions of course)

Having lost my mother recently, and my father some years back, I feel I have kind of lost my childhood too.
I can no longer ask them about things relating to my childhood.
Details of a particular house, or why an uncle did or said something that confused me all my life.
I did at least keep a list of questions to ask her each time I saw her, and wrote her answers down next to them for reference.
I highly recommend asking questions and making notes about them.
When your parents are gone, the answers you never asked for are gone forever too...

The eternal puppy had to go to the vet this week -- I dropped her off in the morning and picked her up in the afternoon. She was a star! The staff said I could bring her back whenever I wanted, and that the pup had gotten lots of belly rubs and pets during the day. Here, she is grazing on the lawn as usual.

Dear software people,

Unicode is older now than ASCII was when Unicode was introduced. It’s not a weird new fad.

It’s complicated but so is the domain it represents. We recognize that we have to think about time zones and leap days and seconds, for instance. And it’s a cleaner abstraction when you aren’t halfhearted about it.
