So you know those science communication publications that write accessible articles about research?

I got an email recently from one saying "We are interested in featuring your research in an upcoming issue of our magazine" and "Would you be available for a 10-minute exploratory phone call?"

I responded by asking what the publication's business model is.

And of COURSE the (very long) response boiled down to "we will charge you $2000 to publish this article."

What a grift.

Seriously! In this day and age?

PSA to other folks who also frequently schedule meetings across the Atlantic: DST ends this Sunday in Europe but it doesn’t end until the following Sunday in the US—because if we’re going to fuck with the clocks let’s maximize the chaos and fuck with them at different times, sure, why not.

Apparently, according to police estimates, there were ~100.000 people at the Women's Strike today in Reykjavík.

That's pretty wild when you consider that the whole country is less than 400.000 people.

Chloroplasts do more than photosynthesis: They're also a key player in plant immunity

https://phys.org/news/2023-10-chloroplasts-photosynthesis-theyre-key-player.html

> Scientists have long known that chloroplasts help plants turn the sun's energy into food, but a new study, led by plant biologists at the University of California, Davis, shows that they are also essential for plant immunity to viral and bacterial pathogens.

Thoughts?
