Rural living is an endless adventure of unexpected power outages. Nice quiet cozy day in with a long walk on a new trail in the midst, and the power is back on just in time for dinner!

Good paper with a very good title. I appreciate every effort by scientists to make their work less obscure to the general public, and a little pun or joke goes a long way. It doesn't have to be dry to be serious.

Enjoying the little things: a solitary ink cap that I enjoyed pointing out to coworkers throughout the day. I believe they may have even enjoyed having it pointed out to them.

Using an infrared camera to see which of my gadgets have an unexpectedly high power draw when they're "off".

First up, this old smart socket is connected to WiFi. Not hugely inefficient, but enough that it is warmer than the idle USB charger next to it.

What’s more satisfying – making someone laugh, or making them come?

NEW blog, which I'm quite pleased with so please do share if you like it.

The cure for cockiness: write AltText. Nothing reminds me quicker how little I know about anything. 'What are those weird indentation thingys? What do you call those fancy edges? What's that shape that’s like a rectangle but has an arch on top? Wait, is it oblong? Wait, what’s the difference between an oblong and a rectangle? Is the window in a belfry, is there a bell? Oh no, maybe it’s a door not a window and I'm just spreading fake news in the Fediverse.'

If you're not worried about the accelerating trend in extreme climate events, it's because the media aren't reporting them.
October temperatures were off the charts bad.

real AI safety is, like, "oh no, we're using this model for important things and we're uncritically accepting the results but it's saying we shouldn't provide medical treatment to black people." fake AI safety is, "what if the AI is so superintelligent that it somehow takes control over everything and murders everybody, not because we gave it control over nuclear weapons or something, but because it's just really smart and somehow found a way to get control of them? i am very smart."

Barely a year ago a beaver had a willow snack here and since then the brook is just sufficiently dammed up to create a place for waterfowl. On my rides I see this spot almost every day. #naturephotography #cycling #germany

This is fresh Portuguese "Broa de Milho", still a bit warm from the oven, with a thick brown crust. It smells of sour-dough and tastes like nothing you could buy except where it's just been made: the bakery isn't a museum but the real thing. The flour comes from a water mill. All that is part of a rural restaurant where traditional food from Northern Portugal, the Minho region near Porto, is served. It's much loved by the locals. Not a tourist place at all.

What is dumber than shutting down well-functioning nuclear plants?

-Lowering safety standards to be able to restart them after a couple of years' deterioration.

I sure hope they won't manage to melt one down - the containment of Siemens-Konvoi is notoriously bad at managing severe accidents.
