Program tegorocznej edycji budowany jest w oparciu o sześć ścieżek tematycznych Europejskiego Miasta Nauki Katowice 2024: klimat i środowisko, zdrowie i jakość życia, przemysły przyszłości, innowacje społeczne, dziedzictwo przemysłowe i kulturowe, kreacja i krytyka. Ponadto realizowana będzie tematyka związana z siedemnastoma celami zrównoważonego rozwoju ONZ.
Co więcej, po raz pierwszy zostało zaplanowanych nie dwa dni atrakcji, a trzy! 😃
Siódma edycja ŚFN odbywa się od 9 do 11 grudnia w Spodku i Międzynarodowym Centrum Kongresowym w Katowicach.
Godziny otwarcia:
• sobota i niedziela (9.12, 10.12): g. 10-18
• poniedziałek (11.12): g. 8-16

I drew this in 2020, posted it on the birdsite, and it went viral (at least by my standards!), earning me 250 new followers.
It shows how much battery various stars would have left if they had battery indicators like phones do. #MastoArt

It snowed lightly yesterday evening, and we woke to this. The dogs were very pleased with this turn of events. #CloverTheLeonberger #SproutTheBerner #Leonberger #BerneseMountainDog #dogsofmastodon
Sometimes I so hate my native language, because it is so strongly gendered.
Like Hungarian and Finnish are no gendered at all.
English is slightly gendered. Like you can say in 1st person: "I'm a teacher. I went for a walk and I've pet a cat. I am so happy now", and no one know what is your gender.
German (at least on the miserable level I pretend to use) is slightly more gendered. So, the sentence above would be: "Ich bin ein Lehrer. Ich bin spazieren gegangen und habe eine Katze gestreichelt. Ich bin gerade so glücklich" for a male, and female would say Ich bin ein Lehrerine." But if we skip the occupation, no one would be any wiser about the gender of the narrator.
Polish is a fucking strongly gendered language.
In Polish teacher is nauczyciel (m) or nauczycielka (f), so that's similar like in German. But that's just the tip of the iceberg. Because we have gender form of verbs (in some tenses) and gendered forms of adjectives. And some forms of numerals.
So, the occupation part we have almost covered. Almost, because nouns decline by cases (like in Latin). But they are still gendered, so I will just omit the details here.
So, lets go through the second sentence. Let start from the 2nd part, as it is easier. "I've pet a cat". The male say: "Pogłaskał_em kota", but female: "Pogłaskał_am kota". So, even if we skip the occupation, you still know, what is the gender of the narrator. The rule for male/female form is valid also for "I went for a walk", but in Polish there some verbs have some extra infix. In Polish, the phenomenon is called "oboczność" (and so far I've failed to find an English translation to it). And "iść" (the basic form of the "to go" verb, infinitive, as they call it in grammar terms", in the past tenses has: poszedłem(m) i poszłam(f). Of course, male could say "poszłem" and still be understood, but this form is considered as incorrect. That was in singular. In plural there are two forms for "we went for a walk": poszliśmy na spacer and poszłyśmy na spacer. When there is even a single male in the group, there is "poszliśmy". Only when there are just women in the group, they can use "poszłyśmy". So, we have covered the gendered verbs.
Let's look at the adjectives. Happy. I am so happy. Again: szczęśliwy(m), szczęśliwa(f). Colours? Green - zielony/zielona. Etc.
When I am writing in Polish I am using the proper forms, because I am not in hurry, and I can proofread the text. But in speaking? Hell yeah, let me mis-gender myself.
Today, just a few minutes ago, I've discovered another trap. Some special numerals. English has "both" to use when two of someone is doing something. We have an analogue. But then it is going even more wicked than te verbs. "We both" in Polish would be "obaj" for a couple of men, "obie" for a couple of women, or "oboje" for a mixed couple.
And let's not even start about the non-binary crowd.
Fuck it. Just fuck it.
PS. For the record: this is just venting. But please feel free to comment.
A truly spectacular AITA here, relevant to writers and #writing.

Dostałem dziś mail z zaproszeniem do wpłaty na Pajacykową Sieć Pomocową PAH - inicjatywę finansowania obiadów dla dzieci z ubogich rodzin, ale niekwalifikujących się się do pomocy systemowej.
Takie wiadomości zawsze mnie dobijają. XXI wiek, środek Europy, Polska, relatywnie bogaty kraj - a wciąż nie rozwiązaliśmy czegoś tak oczywistego jak ubóstwo dzieci. Wstyd.
The new iOS photo search function still confuses ant larvae with "food"
And ... I mean... yes. Yes they are sometimes a food in some places. A very healthy food, I'm told, and pretty good too. However.
I do not have the correct cultural software to process that idea, Apple. Please don't label my pets "food" Please.
So, Black Friday is mostly just annoying.... but my book "Charles Darwin's Barnacle and David Bowie's Spider" is UNDER $20 on the evil corporate site in both the US (https://amzn.to/47E9HKO) and Canada (https://amzn.to/40V6fJJ)! Need a cheap-ish present for anyone interested in natural history?
💫 Hi, interested in #astronomy and #astrophotography or getting your kids into it?
❌ Please absolutely DO NOT buy some Black Friday deal telescope from Amazon or Walmart. (These are all utter shit and unusable and will ruin the hobby for you or your kids.)
🌌 The best thing to do is to go to a star party and try out telescopes!
🔭 The second best thing is to buy a pair of good quality beginner binoculars, those run around $100-$150 (e.g. https://oberwerk.com/product/8x56mm-lightweight-binoculars/)
