This 1961 photo is called “The Mob”, and was shot by professional cat photographer Walter Chandoha. Originally a WW II combat photographer, his signature style was filming cats at their eye level. He collected nearly 100,000 cat photographs and it’s pretty cool that someone made a career out of this.

I keep in touch with my pal and 'killer bvee' colleague Vernor Vinge, and convey his new years greeting to you all. One of the great treasures of our field! We met for lunch (with Prof. John Carroll) a month or so ago and speak by phone often. It's been a rough couple years for us KBvs! But science fiction and futurism... and the bold, scientific and ever-curious civilization that fostered them... shall carry on, even if 2024 turns into a roller coaster. Persevere!

This year's #GävleGoat will be a legend among the local birds. One to tell the chicks about. How one winter day he came, a great goat, bedecked in red. How he was made of food and nesting materials, when the trees were bare and food was scarce. How he sustained them, giving of his own body that they might live. Was he a gift of the gods? Was he a god himself? Perhaps one day we will know...

This article mentions Netflix and an “industry standard“ of ads w/ streaming.

The major difference— Netflix created an entry-level tier w/ ads to gain more customers.

In contrast, #Amazon is using its critical #Prime members to make more profit💰by setting a new standard of ads by default and then telling its customers they can get out of it if they fork over more money.

Throughout the year, homeless and poor individuals are often overlooked. Contrary to popular belief, Christmas is the exception, not the rule. Society tends to care for the disadvantaged only in December, conditioned to do so. The remaining 11 months see widespread neglect, with politicians blaming them for property devaluation, law enforcement harassing and assaulting them, and the state implementing deterrents like spikes under bridges and anti homeless benches instead of providing assistance.

It's been said before: Don't pay it forward in the coffee line. The person behind you has enough money for coffee. They were in line for coffee. You want to know who doesn't have enough money for a coffee, possibly? Your barista. Tip your baristas well, instead of paying for the guy behind you's coffee who is now locked into an order because that's what you paid for. Think about who would benefit more, and who would appreciate it more.
