I got an email about my Win32 programming tutorial (circa 1999) from a 12 year old girl whose hobby is making "programs in languages used way before i was born" ...

First of all yes, excellent, this is a good hobby.

Secondly, don't mind me, I'll just be over here crumbling to dust. :blobimfine:

Jezu 🤦🏻‍♀️

I don't disagree with most of it, but the destruction of the Death Star in Star Wars isn't a terrorist attack. We've got to stop ceding ground to the right who want to make anything against them terrorism. The Death Star was a legitimate military target staffed exclusively by military personnel. The destruction of the Death Star was not intended to cause terror in the population of the Empire. Yes, it was an example of asymmetrical warfare, perhaps even of guerilla tactics (though I'd argue that the Rebels weren't guerillas, merely extremely outnumbered). But not terrorism. I'm sure the Empire framed it as such, but it doesn't meet the definition of terrorism and to allow them to frame reality in that way means they win.

The second Death Star attack was even less terrorism. It did involve some guerilla tactics, but the space battle part was a classic set piece naval engagement. Again, no civilians were involved except Ewoks, and they only fought Empire military personnel with conventional, if unorthodox, tactics.

You may be wondering why I care about this. I care because fiction reflects reality, and in reality we see, time and time again, the right frame any attack against them as a terrorist attack. It's not a distinction without a difference. Terrorism has a definition, and most things which are called "terrorism" are in fact simply asymmetrical warfare (and many things which aren't called terrorism in fact are, but because they're done by powerful forces, we don't call them that). I don't approve of war either, but attacks on legitimate military targets are not terrorism.

Was trying to read Iceland’s only Nobel Laureate & I couldn’t get thru more than 100 pages bc he kept comparing women to cattle over & over. Ugh!!

Usually I read sci-fi & so naturally I now had the question - why don’t sci-fi writers ever get a Nobel? Did a search & other people were asking this. Very few Nobels to sci-fi. Then I found Aniara, an epic space poem (& now movie!) by Nobel Harry Martinson & whoaaa I’m super excited m.youtube.com/watch?v=yZ1jrsoy

against all odds I've managed to survive, but I wish my brain has less difficulty telling whether it's night or day time.

"Wow, you Europeans really do filthy up your environment," an Indian recently said to me. "All the plastic you use to keep things "clean" and "fresh". And you don't care. You only care about your convenience and lecturing the rest of the world about how they should do things."

What we forgot to mention was that when we create all this plastic waste, we try and then dump it in poor countries. Modern Europeans.

#repaircafe #Coventry today. 32 items through the door. Don't know how many were fixed, but it was most of them. Several new faces too. And it all promoted a reorg of the toolboxes this afternoon. More space now for extra tools. 😁

Done a wee bit more work on my new #Textual pet project this morning. Pulled in github.com/davep/textual-count and used it to implement the per-question or per-quiz optional timer I planned for this.

Paradoks zmiany percepcji czasu, jak byłem dzieciakiem to odbierałem Presleya jako jakiegoś dawnego muzyka grającego dla starych ludzi.

Facet umarł, będąc młodszym niż ja teraz, całe dwa lata przed moim narodzeniem, a ja sam mam percepcję piosenek sprzed kilkunastu lat jako "nowych" xd
