The best thing I've ever done as an IT professional is install adblockers for elderly and non-computer-literate clients. Everyone should use them. It's not even just an aesthetics thing, it's an "ads are responsible for serving tons of malicious scripts that trick people into calling numbers or clicking links that lead to scammy shit" thing.

Fuck ads.

Having a mutual "let's not buy each other gifts" agreement with someone you love is very freeing.

You can find other ways to let them know you care and it takes a lot of time and financial pressure off the Christmas period.

It also means less stuff! Which is better for the planet.

When I see famous people in the news parading about in public indoor spaces without masks on in the pandemic, I think of Veronica Lake changing her trademark "over the eye" hairstyle during WWII to help the war effort so that women on assembly lines would stop being maimed due to obscured vision from copying her. I think about it a lot.
