I'm not one for hiking up mountains, but the reward of seeing these elusive birds, ptarmigan, makes the effort worthwhile.

This male was keeping a close eye on us as we watched him and his partner, making their way through the powdery snow near the top of the mountain.

So sad to learn that today CA wildlife officials had to euthanize #P22, the mountain lion who miraculously survived LA's streets and freeways for 12 years. He had numerous health problems, including injuries from getting hit by a car, They decided it didn't make sense to retire him to a sanctuary, let alone release him because he was suffering. Was fortunate to watch this red fox hunt in a field, they as most animals are tuned into senses we have lost. Foxes use earths magnetic field to sense small critters /movement beneath the snow.

Red squirrels are active all year in Canada, regardless of the temperature. As a result, they need a lot of food to fuel that little furnace. This little guy has been stocking up on seeds in my backyard, both eating some and storing others away for later. #nature
