A story about starving in WWII
I think about this story a lot. Of all the children hardened by war, and the generation of memories, big and small, we are losing.
And I think of all the children in Ukraine going through similar hardships. I think of the new generation of memories being made.
We can only hope the Russians are defeated and driven out of all of Ukraine quickly.

A story about starving in WWII
Visited an elderly friend of my wife's yesterday, a 93-year-old Dutch woman. She has led an enterprising life, and always surprises.
She told us about making a "hongertocht", a trip in search of food in the winter of 1944, when much of The Netherlands was starving, especially in the west. She was lucky to be living in the east of the country, where most of the farms are.
Still, finding food meant scouring the countryside for help. /1
He talked about electric cars. I don't know anything about cars, so when people said he was a genius I figured he must be a genius.
Then he talked about rockets. I don't know anything about rockets, so when people said he was a genius I figured he must be a genius.
Now he talks about software. I happen to know a lot about software and Elon Musk is saying the stupidest shit anyone's ever said, so when people say he's a genius I figured I should stay the hell away from his cars and rockets.

In early December, northern hemisphere observers will enjoy their best view of Mars until the 2030s. The red planet will be high in UK skies and will appear brighter than any star. ✨

Also looks like someone at the UK's Royal Astronomical Society set up a Mastodon account and is crafting custom posts for it, but it only has ~300 followers compared with their >50K on Twitter:
I see this all too often -- major public/nonprofit organizations set up shop here, but don't know how to best cross-link/promote it, so the accounts get kind of lost. If you care about #astronomy & like their work, give them a boost or follow :)
More #mosstodon material
I still like to imagine it a tree on a mountain top
Releasing sulphate particles into the atmosphere to stop global warming is like going for weight loss pills without diet and exercise.
Isn't it tempting to want trying anything else, except for reducing anthropogenic CO2 emissions 🙄
Hard to imagine such cruelty.... In freezing temperatures "Busloads of migrants dropped off at vice president’s DC home on Christmas Eve":
