Every time I post about the downfall of Twitter, there's a solid Masto white dude contingent that comes in to reply, "well then, delete your account."

Zero understanding of what having a platform there means to marginalized people/movements.

It's like telling an 1970's organizer to stop using the phone because Bell is an evil monopoly.

Strong "and yet you participate in society" vibes.

They say the United States can't send M1 Abrams MBTs to Ukraine, because they would be difficult to fuel and maintain.

This is bologna.

In addition to a multi-fuel capability that includes diesel and kerosene, the Abrams is one of the most evolved and reliable tank platforms on Earth, having been tested steadily in combat since 1982.

Perhaps the US shouldn't send American tanks into a battle with Russia, but we should be honest about why that choice is being made.

Where is the AI app that turns an overproduced 10 minute YouTube video answering a simple question back into text that takes 20 seconds to read?

Since people usually post pictures of people dressed in red for the Lunar New Year, here's a Scarlet Grenadier (Lathrecista asiatica) that is dressed in red. 🙂 Spotted at Upper Seletar Reservoir Park, Singapore, on 22 Jan 2023.

I just came across 4 image posts in a row with no alt text. This might be a good time to remind people to please remember the visually impaired among us, and kindly take a moment to fill in that box. Thank you! Please boost.

A lone Fen Skater this morning at Upware. This is the first time in many winters when temperatures have provided a second opportunity to hit the ice.

Will iron-air #batteries become the storage solution for our (near future) #electric grid?

Quote: “…iron-air batteries would be 10 times cheaper, perform better, and last 17 times longer. Right now, these batteries’ primary task would be to bridge the gap when utilities need more power during peak hours… Lithium-ion only provides approximately four hours of storage, whereas iron-air could deliver up to 100 hours…”

Weirdly compelling challenge from the British Library

They give you a historical map, you have to pin it to the modern location. Can be anywhere in the world. No clues beyond the book title.

Was a bit worried about the former PM getting a massive loan arranged by the guy he put in charge of the BBC, but then I tuned in to the BBC’s flagship politics show and the former PM’s sister explained it was all above board

One of the most highly cited papers in psychology starts with this sentence: “My problem is that I have been persecuted by an integer”. It doesn’t start with “Cognitive psychologists have long studied short-term memory (Indifferent, 1996; Tedious, 2004; Boring, 2012)”.

We should write journal articles well. We should be allowed to write well.

References, yes, sure. But let’s not turn every sentence in the introduction into a bibliography game.

This morning’s ’Spot the Dog’ is a toughie - even I struggled to spot her when I got back and looked through the pics, and I took the photo! Good luck…I think you’ll need it!

And yet you're shocked when people say that Christianity doesn't respect women. 🤦‍♀️

This is fantastic. When I went to Białowieża, a long time ago, the only bison I could get close to was in a zoo enclosure. It wasn't a small enclosure, but nonetheless I felt so bad for the poor thing.

Unprecedented herd of 170 bison spotted in Poland
