I've been so worried about my lens having a fungus or haze problem, and it's nice to have the sharpness that made me want the lens in the first place back!!

Whoa! 🤩
Über Frankreich (genauer Le Havre) ist heute in der Nacht ein Asteroid verglüht. Das bisher beste Foto, das ich gesehen habe ist von Gijs de Reijke auf Twitter: twitter.com/GijsDeReijke/statu

The pleasure of getting to know your local patch over many years - watching the creases and hollows in the landscape change through seasons, storms and changing light. Late afternoon light today on pines growing in a hollow, on the edge of Ilkley Moor.

Mini Popehat Signal: this is a long shot, but looking for a lawyer familiar with laws governing discipline of public school teachers in NC who might be able to offer some pro bono advice and guidance to a teacher there.

March 15 is the day people leave Twitter.

The abandonment of Twitter in the Musk era has, for now, been inconsistent and chaotic, with people leaving at different times and for different reasons.

An organized effort to promote a "Leave Twitter" day, when everyone still reluctantly there logs off for the last time, with enough advance to line up alternate sites, should help get people out.

Thus, March 15. The Ides of Musk. Spread the word.

Earth's human population recently reached 8 billion people.

Here's where they live.

Hah! I just noticed that someone translated the mastodon UI to #esperanto

It is truly wonderful what geeks produce when you give them an open API, and a platform that welcomes contributions.

I've since left twitter in response to Elon Musk's repeated attacks on public health and his repeated endorsement of medical disinformation. My account is locked and people can no longer see the original thread unless they followed me before I left.

In light of the Times story, I think it's important for people to see the original thread in full. I've therefore made a pdf available here:

Feel free to cross-post that link to twitter if you still indulge.

My first foray into #mosstodon ! This is in the #rspb Insh Marches near Kingussie #scotland. Sadly no little #birds flew in or out but boy is there a lot of moss!

I promise you, this is not a weird little rubber desert island toy for smurfs, complete with coconut trees.

It's a liverwort which I just found growing between some paving stones behind our house. It must be...2cm (3/4") high?

We got a spare wireless mouse from the classroom next to this office. I had to pair it to another Unifying receiver to create a new set. But whatever I tried, it refused to connect. Everything else I had would pair up fine, but this one mouse just wouldn't.

I went to fetch the original receiver from the classroom to see if it was still paired with the mouse. It was, so I unpaired it and now the mouse could connect to the new receiver fine. Everything finally worked like a charm and I returned the original receiver.

And, um... since the classroom's workspace was right behind the wall behind me... I realized I might've inadvertently done shenanigans with the teacher's laptop. She didn't notice it because she was busy teaching, but I hope I didn't accidentally remove any emails! 😬

In hindsight it was pretty hilarious. 😋

Dość telefonów od szefa po godzinach pracy! ✊ Walczymy o to, żeby taki zakaz wpisać w kodeksie pracy. Masz prawo do odpoczynku i spędzenia wolnego czasu jak tylko chcesz, bez szefa zakłócającego Twój spokój.

Behold the tale of a Facebook data scientist fired because he refused to run a little test that his bosses demanded ...

... in which he'd update Messenger so that it drained some users' batteries faster

The data scientist accurately noted that this was unethical as hell -- it could literally endanger people who rely on their phone as a lifeline

As @pluralistic notes, it's part of why "feudal security" -- trusting a big tech firm to keep you safe -- never really works: medium.com/@doctorow/when-face

For #SuperbOwlSunday

No idea how this superb screech owl got trapped in the screened porch, traumatizing all parties involved, but the episode was soon brought to a satisfying conclusion by propping open the door and letting nature take its course.
