The fact that Americans are risking their lives traveling to a region of Mexico controlled by cartels in order to obtain healthcare says a lot more about the USA than it does about Mexico.

Why does school teach us to selectively pick evidence that supports our thesis? It's the opposite of what it should teach...

How come I finished university and never had a class about intellectual honesty?

Someone asked: I've owned only Brother printers for the past decade and more. They don't pull this DRM crap and they work well with Linux.

Do not -- do not -- buy a printer (or anything else) from HP. Unfortunately, since Congress refuses to make illegal what is flagrantly unfair and unethical, that is your only option. Such a sleazy, arrogant company. https://arstechnica.com/gadgets/2023/03/customers-fume-as-hp-blocks-third-party-ink-from-more-of-its-printers/

Gimme! Gimme! Gimme! A new spider genus!

Meet Abba transversa—named for the pop group ABBA—a new genus and species of orb-weaver in the family Araneidae. Scientists identified it from specimens that were collected in coastal areas of Queensland and New South Wales in Australia, and the name was inspired by the band's songs and the "Mamma Mia!" film musicals, which "provided hours of entertainment for the authors." 🕷️ https://phys.org/news/2023-03-spider-genus-band-abba.html #science #NewSpecies #spider #ABBA

Heeeyyy, it's my first byline for @cnn! Bees pick up "waggle dance" steps when they're novice workers, by checking out the dances of more experienced hivemates. If they miss that chance, their dances are riddled with errors—some of which never get fixed 🐝 https://www.cnn.com/2023/03/09/world/bees-waggle-dance-scn/index.html #SciComm #science #bees #entomology

it’s incredible to me that some birds can just glide so casually in the air. and the fact that each feather is likely sensing the air movement and adjusting accordingly is mind blowing. these northern harriers glide so slowly for how graceful they are. it’s wild. big fan of harriers over here.

#Python people! what's the best way to share an #interactive #notebook with people online? I have come across mercury https://runmercury.com/tutorials/website-python-jupyter-notebook/ but happy to hear about other people's experiences. I wasn't looking to run a full binder run, just a simple dashboard.

Yesterday evening I was playing with some new techniques ✏️

What do you think? Do pastel neurons have any future?

found this on my hard drive and decided to render out a turnaround

it was my first ever attempt at photogrammetry, its a bit patchy in places as I was just using my phones camera

its pretty magical just being able to take an object from the real world into your 3d renderer

Today is National Barbie Day. Why don’t we have a funeral director Barbie yet?!?

Barbie has made great strides in the past decade, showing children that girls can grow into any number of career paths. Women in STEM? Yes please! We still don’t have a mortician option though. Since mortuary schools are now over 70% women, it’s high time we were represented as a valid profession to aspire to.

Want to sign a petition for Mattel to create Undertaker Barbie? Here ya go!

✨NEW PAPER✨Imagine you’ve got a piece of plastic stuck in your stomach - stabbing, poking, and prodding constantly. Besides being incredibly uncomfortable, what would that do to your delicate internal tissues?
One of our #AdriftLab Honours students (Hayley) has just published her first, first-author paper in the Journal of Hazardous Materials, investigating the effect that #PlasticIngestion has on the formation of scar tissue within the stomach of #seabirds from #LordHoweIsland. While scar tissue formation is a natural part of the healing process, excessive scarring can impact tissue function and cause disease, known as #fibrosis #OpenAccess paper here ➡️ sciencedirect.com/science/arti...
We found plastic ingestion was significantly related to severe, organ-wide scar tissue formation in the stomach, with some birds exhibiting a near-complete loss of tissue structure (photo panel on LEFT: collagen/scar tissue has stained blue). This is the first time plastic-related scar tissue formation has been documented in wild animals, but what we could see was so severe that it also led us to propose a new disease, #Plasticosis – fibrosis as a result of plastic.
As >1200 species are already documented to ingest plastic across both aquatic and terrestrial environments (including us!), our findings have major implications.
