hi, I'm Liz and after joining a few months ago, just getting brave enough to post my #introduction

I'm a #Welsh girl living in #NYC. I work in #data (#policy and #privacy). #Dog mom and celebrating #Wrexham's rise to the #efl (although I'm more of a #rugby fan).

#NewYorkWelsh #Wrecsam #IFTAS

When an app asks for permissions, the OS should not only let you answer yes or no. Every category should havev a "yes, but feed the app fake data" option.

Want my contacts for no reason? Have these generated fake ones! Wanna listen to my microphone? Here's random ambiance sounds! Location? I'm on a tiny 5x5m island!

Hell yeah! Put it all in your databases!

Actively sabotaging and punishing services wins over boycotts any day.

To spowoduje lawinę kompletnie niepotrzebnych wizyt w POZ. I blokady lekarzy wystawiających recepty.
Genialne pomysły MZ.

The Banach-Tarskii paradox is a bizarre mathematical theorem that says it is mathematically possible to decompose a single ball and reassemble the pieces into two exact copies of the original ball. I think of this every time I brush 3 metric tons of cat fur off of one of my cats

So, fun story. In the middle of ActivityPub's standardization, the Social Web Working Group nearly got shut down because we couldn't get the big corporate players to pay attention to us, and the W3C's membership structure required paid membership participation.

We tried *desperately* to get Twitter, Facebook, Google, etc to look at us. They weren't interested. What I heard was that they had written off the idea that decentralized social networks could exist or work by then.

Luckily, management agreed that the SocialWG's work was interesting enough that we should continue. And later having seen what happened when big players entered a standards group... ActivityPub was probably a better spec for being written by people passionate about it instead.

But anyway. That's all to say... it's so *weird* now to be in the present moment, as you can imagine...

Dziś będzie instalowana nowa wersja #Mastodon 4.1.3 zawierająca ważne poprawki security i zmiany. Ponieważ będzie robiona ASAP nie podam godziny ani długości przerwy. Postaramy się jak najkrócej.

Przepraszamy za niedogodności, siła wyższa

I see people here asking us to follow them over to #Threads. I don’t understand that. I’m asking people at Threads to follow me over here, where we’re free from ads and algorithms.

At this point it seems like Georgia is the best bet for a serif body font and Trebuchet for a sans-serif titling/heading font, but I’m not exactly happy with this combination.

Is there anything else I can use that’s (a) not Arial & Times; (b) freely available for Linux; and (c) ubiquitous enough that normal Mac & Windows users will have it installed?

Question for #FOSS friends:

I’m a Linux/LaTeX user, but I often need to create Word documents for things like committee work where I have to collaborate with Microsoft users. I *abhor* Arial and Times, and I don’t have access to MS’s new fonts (Calibri et al.) MS and Mac users won’t have my preferred fonts (the Libertinus family and the like), so I need to use fonts that I can safely assume are on everybody’s computer. 1/2

@DrSandraDuffy I don’t know much about academic twitter, but if at least a part of it is based in Europe then this scenario is not really likely

I love Google’s “Material Symbols” Save icon, because the most charitable explanation is that it was drawn by someone who’s too young to have ever seen a floppy disk in real life. fonts.google.com/icons?icon.qu

Wybiło nam 1k+ followersów! 🥳

One real thing I've noticed as a parent of a young child is how EASY it is to emotionally manipulate me by evoking harm to a kid, now.

An action movie with a baby in danger messes with me.

It's a visceral, physical sensation, and fascists like Moms 4 Liberty intentionally play on it.
