The First Amendment prohibits the government from placing restrictions on speech. In this essay, I will pretend that it also prohibits companies and other non-government entities from doing so.

People born in 1959 are 100 ppm old.

The Nature Conservancy has a calculator that gives you CO₂ levels in the atmosphere on a given year.

That might be useful if you envy people who have "I was born at x ppm" in their bios.

It doesn't work if you were born before 1937 :(

Big news! I have a new column in Scientific American, for which I'm deeply grateful. The first one is on how my mother's #dementia showed me another side of #neurodiversity. Rough stuff, but the state of eldercare in the US is horrific. Please spread this link. scientificamerican.com/article

It has been years (maybe longer) since I have seen a billing statement from a big medical group (and that's really all there is now) that was transparent, honest, and reasonable. Every bill has overcharges, made-up fees, invented costs.

The whole system has been captured by a conglomerate of monopolies, just irreparably broken.

I haven’t finished processing all my photos from my recent wetlands #birding, but I’m particularly chuffed that I caught the end result of this American #crow’s fishing expedition. It very clearly hated getting its feet wet, but apparently it was worth it to make a catch! Very cool #corvid behavior I’d never seen before!

People say "decentralization doesn't work as good as the facebooks and the twitters", but then I post here on highly decentralized Mastodon a silly little joke about the commando character in the old video game Command & Conquer from 1995 and get a response from someone who worked on the original game! .. uh, maybe it is working already? infosec.exchange/@codinghorror

In case you missed it, all links on Mastodon count as 23 characters towards your limit, no matter how many characters the link really is.

So, you don't need to use link shorteners on Mastodon as they won't actually affect the link's length.

Mastodon does this because it's better for everyone's privacy to avoid link shortener services, it means people can see what they're clicking on, and the link won't stop working if the shortener service shuts down.

Whenever you're talking to support people, you're talking, sometimes, to people like me - and some simple choices you make like tone and attitude can really just crush a person's entire day. Please try to be patient, and kind. And, hey, you could argue I should try to be a little more bullet-proof - that's a fair point. But I care about our customers *and* our open-source users. So every barb still hurts. Please try to be kind.

A small ditch in the . Now trying to confirm what I heard – that this used to be a small river, Mietułka, which formed the border between Poland and Lithuania a couple of centuries ago. Now just a ditch.

Pro Tip: When selecting a social media platform, always research its cat content. Look for pictures and videos of cats sleeping on people, sitting on stuff you need, and being floofy derps.

Likewise, look for content that captures how cats don't give a flying you know what. This can be as simple as a cat looking at the camera with a "WTF, eat me human" expression.

While you are encouraged to "shop around," know that Mastodon has top quality cat content.

The weird ever-expanding tapestry of lichen will never stop being fascinating to me. Love how the shift of focus & scale in noticing is like a connection back to something primal and grounded.

If you need to be delighted by something this morning, I present the tree goats of Morocco.

I was driving near Essaouira the first time I saw this and literally slammed on my brakes because I thought I was suddenly hallucinating. But then you learn how common it is and after a day or two it's, oh, yeah, more goats in trees.
