New initiative:

Instead of saying places aren't accessible I'm going to start just saying I'm not allowed to go there because I'm disabled.

It's the same thing.

Her: do you want to go to the haunted house?

Me: I'm not allowed to go because I'm disabled.

Great post by the National Weather Service in Birmingham, Alabama! We know most supercells do not produce tornadoes, so just because you see a circulation on radar does not mean a tornado warning is warranted. The environmental conditions the storm is moving through are also important to assess.

@gwagner @cyclingeu A Copenhagen local comedian once ran for office in the municipality on a platform that he would turn all those street gutters 90 degrees so bikes wouldn't get stuck in them. And amazingly, enough of the city's bikers voted for and he won a seat at the municipality. Now, it's been standard practice to have them turned correctly since.

“For these nocturnal fireflies, [if] you put up a streetlight or a security light on somebody’s house, there aren’t going to be any fireflies,” Lewis said. “If they can move out of that area, they will.”

Taohan Lin and Nataliya Rybnikova used nighttime-lights data from space to track resulting GDP losses during the COVID-19 pandemic, arguing that the event shows that the method is as valid during disasters as during normal times. #ALAN2023

Chris Kyba shows results from a multispectral aerial survey of Cologne, Germany, including near-UV and near-IR. Surprising types of sources that were more or less bright in non-optical wavelengths. #ALAN2023

This is interesting: a person asking a question said that France has apparently tied funding for revision and improvement of outdoor lighting to a requirement to decrease the total amount of light. That might explain why we see decreases in lighting viewed from satellite in lots of France.

#ALAN2023 talks are about to start! I'm sitting next to a biologist who studies the effects of light pollution on sea turtles in Australia, and another who studies the effects on mammals in the western US. This is so cool!

You can tell Wolverine is a Canadian character written by an American because his super power is healthcare.

In my local public library I noticed on the reservations shelf that someone had ordered volumes by Ayn Rand.

Perhaps the borrower was some general researcher, but I did enjoy the thought it was an earnest libertarian missing the irony of using the municipal library system to state-subsidise their access to Atlas Shrugged and other works.

If you've ever seen video of one of those nightmare plague hoard roach infestations how do you think that happens? Well you have a dirty chaotic place with excellent food & water sources. This alone isn't enough. Such a gross environment would attract a whole ecosystem of critters. Not just all roaches.

No, what happens next is spraying. Killing everything. But no spray lasts forever and roaches are best adapted to move back in first. They have not competition: welcome to the nightmare.

Why use an ordinary measuring tape when you can measure things with a laser? If there is ever an opportunity to incorporate lasers in everyday activities, we must take it.

Here, Hesam Moshiri shows you how to build your own laser ranger finder using our RP2040 chip.

@Poppycock "Those are some real nice ovaries you have there. Would be a shame if something were to happen to them..."

The Genentech CEO says he's considering delaying the release of a new treatment for ovarian cancer patients in order to make more money.
