After 6 years, my Blackberry Key2 is finally nearing an end. Prolonged camera use causes overheating shut down and lack of updates past Android 8.nnnn is now affecting some functionality.
With today’s state of @pluralistic “enshitification” I’m happy to have fewer apps and stay out of tech databases everywhere.
So what’s the masto equivalent phone hardware to purchase today? Do we have to be beholden to perpetual planned obsolescence?
Introducing Bark! Low-latency multi-receiver live-sync lossless audio streaming for local networks. It's like Sonos, but open source, so nobody can brick your devices remotely. It's also written in Rust :)
It sends 48khz uncompressed float32 data over UDP multicast. It can achieve playback sync to within hundreds of microseconds in ideal conditions, and usually to within a millisecond.
I've been working on it in my spare time over the past week, and I'm pretty happy with how it's shaped up. I have three receivers setup and it works remarkably well at keeping everything in sync as I walk around my house. For now it only really works on Linux, and supports Pipewire (and Pulse in theory), but there's no huge impediment to making it truly cross-platform.
It also features a fancy live stats subcommand, which can used on any computer in the same multicast domain to watch the status of the stream cluster:
I'm eating some nice local goat cheese that has specks of blue mould. The only thing is that it wasn't supposed to have mould. I hope this is not my last toot.
This is bad. Naomi Wu, the Chinese #DIY tech-maker and internet personality most people know as #SexyCyborg, is silenced by Chinese authorities.
I completely missed it. It should be big in the news. This is China's most important independent voice, and also an important feminist and #LGBT voice worldwide.
Her Uighur partner can't even leave the house anymore. The situation is very bad, and needs much more attention.

This is a weird request, but I figure the worst I can get for it is silence. I'm totally #blind and have very bad hearing. To set up a device through its inaccessible software, I'm in need of a sighted person for about an hour and a half to two hours who can access a computer remotely, speaks and reads English, and can describe images and graphs. The person needs to be quite patient with follow-up questions, needs to be willing to repeat if needed, as well as be able to click on items and describe what happens on the screen. The person needs to be fairly detail oriented because some of the images appear to have arrows and other ways to expand them, according to the manual. Though I'm happy to be reasonable, I have no clue how much to offer as payment, this is my first request of this kind. I'm posting it because I know we have some blind people here who may be able to point me towards someone who has done this before and may be willing to do it for such a short period. Boosts welcome, indeed, they're appreciated. #hearingimpaired #software #A11Y #accessibility #remote
Twitter: I follow news and political giants, but all I see are bad people and arguments
Bluesky: I follow 10% of my old friends who were able to get out of twitter in time and sometimes it works
Threads: I follow my friends but I can’t see them through the algorithm of businesses
Mastodon: oh look a beekeeper in the Netherlands
Simply adding plants into our built environment completely transforms them and our relationship with them.

Z publikacji poświęconych kinu japońskiemu znajdziecie tam dwie moje książki oraz dwie monografie Krzysztofa Loski ("Poetyka filmu japońskiego" i "Kenji Mizoguchi i wyobraźnia melodramatyczna "Wydawnictwo Uniwersytetu Jagiellońskiego". A z rzeczy bliskich geograficznie "Nawiedzony przez obrazy: Twórczość filmowa Tiana Zhuangzhuanga" Alicji Helman.
Filmowy horror reprezentują "Upiór w kamerze: Zarys kulturowej historii kina grozy" Magdaleny Kamińskiej, "Kobieta i demony: O widzu horroru filmowego" Iwony Kolasińskiej-Pasterczyk oraz "Gore, seks, ciało, psychoanaliza: Pułapka interpretacyjna" Andrzeja Pitrusa.
Weimarskie filmy Fritza Langa i kino niemieckie do roku 1945" Tomasz Kłysa, "Tożsamość i media: O filmach Atoma Egoyana" Krzysztofa Loski, "Zachować dystans: Filmowy świat Roberta Altmana" Rafała Syski, "Dotykając lustra: Melodramaty Douglasa Sirka" Andrzeja Pitrusa i "Filmowy świat Pedra Almodovara: Uniwersum emocji" Katarzyny Citki.
“Thousands of scientists are cutting back on Twitter, seeding angst & uncertainty.”
That survey with only a 5% response rate went viral & got me wondering about other evidence & how the #ScienceTwitter #MastodonMigration was panning out.
So I updated my study tracker & wrote a new post @PLOS : https://absolutelymaybe.plos.org/2023/08/20/how-is-science-twitters-mastodon-migration-panning-out/
tl;dr There's been a big recent surge here; the future of #ScienceMastodon looks bright; ScienceX is materially diminished tho the network is still there.

Hi. Did you know there's a library of free-to-use music for your next #podcast, university assignment, #radio show or perhaps powerpoint presentation?
I painstakingly made everything here and I'm not done yet. There are at present, 171 tracks but over a thousand variants, and it's all yours for the price of 0.00.
I do have to warn you however, that if you plan to use any of the tracks between 1 and 150 on youtube, you will be hit with a silly copyright claim that I have no intention of issuing takedowns for, so please, despite that, feel free regardless.
If you like what you hear, please boost for larger reach. My goal is to have a library of high-quality tracks for anyone to use for any purpose whatsoever. Thank you.
🆕 blog! “Let's build a website using XML!”
It is 2023. XHTML is dead and buried. HTML is a "living standard" with billions of users. So what kind of idiot would want to build a website using XML? Me. I am that idiot. Last year, I launched a "web page" which didn't use HTML. Called, appropriately enough, "YOU DON'T NEED HTML!" That (ab)used […]

"I am honored to be a banned book whenever it happens, because I look at the history of books that have been banned; the history of who bans them. I will never be on the side of the people who ban the books. I'm on the other side. I will always be on the side of the libraries."

Ok Mastodon, you're smart.
This poster used to hang on my bedroom wall in the mid-80s. I am searching for the artist, and indeed, another print of it. This image has been taken from a photograph with the poster in the background, so it is very low-res.
It is not an album cover, and is not associated with any singer or band.
Yes, I have tried Google Image Search and TinEye to no avail. Help?
