As Twitter self-immolates, I am seeing people I know setting up on Bluesky.

I find this perplexing. Can people really not learn the lesson that a social network owned by a capitalist is a social network they don't control?

You can argue about whether Bluesky or Mastodon has the better technology, but what's 100% clear is that Mastodon is run BY users FOR users. And that difference is the only one that matters in the end.

This quiz has ended.

The correct answer is “for a man,” though most people did not hear that. Armstrong swore he said “for a man,” but even after he listened to the audio himself, he was in doubt too, as he could not hear it either. However, in 2006, a computer analysis of the sound waves provided evidence that he said “for a man” and not “for man.”

This whole Church of Scientology freaking out over how right to repair will force them to open up how their e-meters work thing is my favourite current side plot. 🍿

I've just begun the process of recabling my office. By that I mean unplgging stuff throwing all the cables into the hallway and then plugging all the cables back in, in a more organised way. I cannot tell you the crimes that I have uncoveed. I cannot tell you the number of PSUs plugged in, with nothing at the other end. Honestly, I don't think I'm ever going to need to buy a USB Hub ever again.

Also ports fail when you change stuff that's been plugged in for literal decades.

TIL: the standard error in Unix is a thing because one day in the 70s, a photosetting pipeline ended up producing beatiful printed messages „cannot open file foobar”.

Ponieważ zaczęło mnie obserwować parę osób, które chyba nie wiedzą, co czynia, to krótko o mnie: pieski są lepsze od ludzi, jebać kościół, demontować kapitalizm, ratować mokradła.

Did I ever mention that I wrote a book? About the history of females Geoscientists from around the world?

The oldest printed book in the Huntington Library isn’t its Gutenberg Bible, but a Chinese Buddhist text nearly four centuries older. huntington.org/videos-and-reco

a takeout meal, squirrel style?

I saw a squirrel run across the road with a whole sunflower seed head in its mouth.

Isn't it funny how English "ruckus" and Polish/Hungarian "rokosz" are close in terms of sound and meaning? While "ruckus" does not seem to have an established etymology, "rokosz" is much older and frequently used in old Polish. It is a loan from Hungarian "rakás". It can mean a lot of things from uproar to a mutiny, however generally it means some sort of public disturbance. Like a ruckus.

I am guessing not a single person at Burning Man will take home from this that their fantasy of self-sufficiency in the desert is in fact just a fantasy and is symptomatic of how some of the self-same people are causing the world itself to burn.

I am currently writing down the story of the domain mastodon.de, expect a release soon! Complete🔥:blobcatspace:

Między Wrocławiem i Kłodzkiem mieści się miejscowość o nazwie "Węgry". Zacząłem więc się zastanawiać, czy odmienia się ją "na Węgrzech" (jak kraj).

Zajrzałem więc do mojego ulubionego źródła:

nlp.actaforte.pl:8080/Nomina/M

Jedyny sposób, by odmienić poprawnie, to wiedzieć dokładnie, o której miejscowości się mówi.
