Barely a year ago a beaver had a willow snack here and since then the brook is just sufficiently dammed up to create a place for waterfowl. On my rides I see this spot almost every day. #naturephotography #cycling #germany

This is fresh Portuguese "Broa de Milho", still a bit warm from the oven, with a thick brown crust. It smells of sour-dough and tastes like nothing you could buy except where it's just been made: the bakery isn't a museum but the real thing. The flour comes from a water mill. All that is part of a rural restaurant where traditional food from Northern Portugal, the Minho region near Porto, is served. It's much loved by the locals. Not a tourist place at all.

What is dumber than shutting down well-functioning nuclear plants?

-Lowering safety standards to be able to restart them after a couple of years' deterioration.

I sure hope they won't manage to melt one down - the containment of Siemens-Konvoi is notoriously bad at managing severe accidents.

One year ago today November 18, 2022 was the Twitter Lockout, and in one amazing day a quarter million new users flocked to Mastodon. Not everyone stayed, but a great many did. We have continued to confront disruptive growth, while striving to hold onto ideals of community, kindness and respect for each other. Is Mastodon perfect? No, but today, one year latter, the state of our platform is strong. Open social media is thriving.

Wchodzę, rzucam "cześć", ściągam buty, podchodzę do szafy i nonszalanckim ruchem ściągam krawat rozwiązując go.
- Uwalili Cię? - zapytał z mieszanką przerażenia i współczucia kolega?
- Nie, dlaczego? - odparłam ze zdziwieniem
- Bo nie potrzebujesz już krawata.

Oh, well :D

I chyba właśnie odkryłam nowy nałóg.

Billionaires don't need their money, they'll just waste it on drink.

This is just fucking with us and daring us to tax them.

Record for world's priciest bottle of whisky smashed at London auction

phys.org/news/2023-11-world-pr

> A bottle of The Macallan 1926, described by Sotheby's auction house as the "most valuable whisky in the world", on Saturday went under the hammer for a record £2.1 million.

"Going anywhere for the holidays?"
"Yes, upstate."
"Plane or car?"
"Oh Jesus no! Train."
"How long will that take?"
"9 hours. But my vacation starts when I get on the train, not when I get off the plane. It's much less stressful."
"You know... I can see that..."

Folks, I may have a made a convert today. Let's be real. Driving is work, and flying is torture. A train ride, might seem "long" but did you count all the time you spend getting to the airport, the security checks? The silly rules?

In college, I took a class called The Letters of Paul. I took it for two very good reasons:

1. I was (and am) named Paul.
2. The prof was (and is) cool.

I didn’t figure it was an especially practical course. It was for fun, for the challenge, for the cultural knowledge, for the pleasure of doing it.

WHAT LIBERAL ARTS EDUCATION IS FOR: A THREAD

Agree with everything in this thread about the importance of *breadth* in education - especially the inclusion of non-STEM subjects for people following a #STEM track.

do you have a fire extinguisher in your house?

if not, I highly recommend grabbing one if you can afford it. powder is a good place to start, since it works for almost all household fire types and is safe around electricals. a brand new 1kg one is about £15 and a 2kg one is about £20.

a few years back I had an incident where having a fire extinguisher in our kitchen saved me from severe burns and limited the fire damage to stuff I could cheaply repair. coincidentally, I had bought it that day.

So the biggest news in tech seems to be that some billionaire CEO of a VC funded AI company had been fired.

This really caught my attention as a very important news.

Until I realised, to my greatest disappointment, that he was fired by other humans.
