While discussing a possible site for a telescope array in India:

“Without domes, won’t the monkeys will make a complete mess of the mirrors?”

“No, the leopards with deal with the monkeys.”

Which led me to a different… yet distinctly related… question 🤔

!! 17 lat temu !! Ciec zaczęło wczoraj. :D

A był plan kończyć czwarty ul rozgrzebany jeszcze przed świętami. :>

In preparation for adding the railways of Czechia – which should happen next week – I have updated map.railwayhistory.org/ to the latest version of the renderer.

Line numbers are now encased in a box so they stand out more. If you don’t like that, you can now turn them off with the hashmark button.

This also lays the foundation for another upcoming feature: showing timetable numbers in the passenger map. Stay tuned!

I remember when as a kid I learned about yeast.

You put yeast in an environment with some sugars, and it will eat the sugars and excrete alcohol until either sugar runs out or alcohol concentration is enough to kill it.

I remember thinking to my 11 or 12 year old self: "wow, yeast is dumb!"

Anyway, completely unrelated:

In Paris, we made it real, like...real, our mascot for the 2024 Olympics.

This ain't no joke

This is what I see in the Tesla logo, and cannot unsee:

A female Caribbean paper wasp stands guard over an early season nest. Puerto Rico.

My wife asked me what a certain movie was about and she remembered when I said.

> People want to put on a play but they are forbidden to do so.

I imagine there are many #movies that fit that description. Which one was I talking about?

Adults should be allowed to introduce ourselves to strangers like 5-year-olds do.

"Hi, I'm Lana. I'm 46 and a half. Do you have any friends? I like coffee and late-19th century Parisian classical music. You are really bald."

If someone wants to exercise or whatever, that's cool. Exercise can be a fun activity! If you want to share your love of exercise you can! You can say how great you feel when you do it, you can share what you've learned to do movements safely, you can share how much you like the comraderie of team sports or the dedication of solo sport, you can be an utter nerd for your activity!

The issue is in the prescribing. It's in the value-laden word of "should", it's in the assumption of a standard body that we should be striving toward. The idea that your value increases if you are "improving" the number on a scale or shaving seconds off a run. The million assumptions built in to the idea that "healthy" looks a certain way for everyone.

And if you're talking about the subject you ought to make very clear who your audience is and do some self-crit on why this message for that audience and not a different one.
