My #NewYearResearchResolution is to read more.
Urgent projects and tight deadlines make it difficult to prioritise reading, but I think it is one of the most important duties of a good scientist!
"If our political and legal ideas really are founded on the logic of slavery, then how did we ever eliminate slavery? Of course, a cynic might argue we haven't; we've just relabled it. The cynic would have a point: an ancient Greek would have certainly seen the distinction between a slave and an indebted wage laborer as, at best, a legalistic nicety."

Confirmed second-highest wave of all time.
Where’s that herd immunity we were promised?

After spending a few weeks lurking, it's time for an #introduction.
I'm Christian, based in southwestern #Germany after fleeing the Brexit fallout in the #UK. A #biologist by training, I spent a long time with #neurobiology research. Today I work for two small companies in the #fluorescence #microscopy and #motioncontrol fields.
I have been #sailing #dinghies for over three decades, with a partcular passion for highperformance #skiffs (still a beginner at sailing faster than the wind blows). Over a #boatbuilding project (a #Farr37 is still work in progress) I discovered #handtool #woodworking and now dabble in furniture making.
The meltdown of the Birdsite reminded me how much I miss #usenet - maybe Mastodon will be a good replacement?
Ok, you know what? Let's make a run for number 1!
I need your help folks! See the post this reply goes to, I humbly ask your help in getting the little guy get a big win!

Teach me something useful about a subject you know very well.
Doesn't have to be a detailed lesson, in fact ideally just a few words or a single post.
Boosts appreciated, 2023 is coming and I'd like to get smarter. Maybe we can all get a bit smarter.
I'll start:
My job is voiceovers and I can tell you with absolute confidence that reading your writing out loud is like a magic trick for better proofreading.
The mouth stumbles on mistakes the eyes glide over.
Greta Thunberg decimated trump with just her staring at him.
Now she took Andrew Tate down IRL when she eviscerated him with a few words while he tried to clap back at her online & revealed his location, long enough for authorities to arrest him for human trafficking.
Don't mess with Greta Fools!
When will tiny men with fragile egos learn? 🤣💀

Number of Americans hospitalized with COVID-19 rises to 43,758, the highest in nearly 5 months
Andrew Tate picking a fight with a teenage girl, getting owned so badly he felt the need to spend an entire day filming and editing a response video, then said response video alerting the policy to his location allowing them to arrest him, is I think the maximum amount of schadenfreude physically possible.
A spicy read:
"Here are a handful of scenarios, not a complete list, but something to consider as “Infinity COVID” has become the mass-infection doctrine heading into 2023."
Scenario 5 is the one I have been thinking a lot about this year, after having read a book about the nazis' eugenics policy.

Greta Thunberg is 19 years old and single-handedly humiliated 36-year-old Andrew Tate, who is now arrested for human trafficking in Romania after trying to “clap back” at Greta. Never mess with Greta. An absolute legend and icon. The best of Gen Z.

What I’m getting from these “just stop masking!” pieces is that deep down, some people feel so guilty about not masking that they’d like everyone to stop… so they can stop feeing guilty. 🤔

Alan Turing was a mathematician & cryptographer who was a leading code-breaker in the team that decrypted Nazi Germany’s Enigma machine during WWII. He inspired modern computing & what became artificial intelligence.
Instead of being hailed as a genius & hero, Turing was convicted as a homosexual & forced to endure chemical castration. He died by suicide at 41 in 1954.
The British government didn’t apologize until 2009 & Queen Elizabeth II finally pardoned him in 2013. #history #science

@virtuistics@twitter.com @Walling_B@twitter.com @fitterhappierAJ@twitter.com you can cherry pick immunology studies all you want to make a point (COVID IS AIRBORNE AIDS / IT DESTROYS YOUR IMMUNE SYSTEM) but that doesn't make you right.

Good blog post (sequel to another good one) on how science should try other quality control methods than pre publication peer review. I haven't seen this on Mastodon but see it lots in my Twitter feed, so who can I follow on Mastodon to see more #metascience content like this? https://experimentalhistory.substack.com/p/the-dance-of-the-naked-emperors
