RT @Patticus: 10 years ago today @aaronsw took his own life after overly aggressive prosecution.
He invented internet infrastructure.
He defeated the greatest threat the Internet had ever seen.
And you probably don't know who he is.
You should.
Here’s his story 🧵

Science has a replication problem. Should funding be shifted to address this?
"you could put your money into 100 psychology experiments. At the end of the day, you’d have produced a large stack of papers, some of which might be important, and some of which might even be true."
Whereas funding 100 replication experiments would "impact tens of thousands of subsequent papers by creating momentum for improved standards in the field."

post covid health & disability experience
A strangely beautiful thing about having severe post covid symptoms is that I feel attuned to the world in this deeply real way. Like you cannot paper over stress, and pretend it doesn't impact your body. You can't live in the dissociated performance state that capitalism wants you to be in. My whole identity as a researcher is about striving for an authentic observer of the world and this is really that.
The Unjournal: An initiative to commission independently reviewer feedback for research articles.
Ideally, initiatives like this could encourage "living projects" and "dynamic documents" that are transparently updated through peer feedback and built upon over time. Opposing the current norm, which is to publish a one-time, uneditable pdf and moving on.

So you are 96% likely to walk/sit by/ breathe the air of someone infected while flying. You can choose to rely only on air filtration (which helps on a running plane- NOT in TSA, boarding, etc), but this ends debate on utility of N95 use during air travel. https://www.audacy.com/wwjnewsradio/news/national/coronavirus-found-in-samples-from-96-percent-of-flights

How to slow down scientific progress
"Leo Szilard—the physicist who first conceived of the nuclear chain reaction and who urged the US to undertake the Manhattan Project—also wrote fiction. His book of short stories, The Voice of the Dolphins, contains a story “The Mark Gable Foundation,” dated 1948."
You can see the full thing at this link, but I've also taken a screenshot of an excerpt. 😬 🤔 😢

New Year, new job, new project!
I'm excited to announce that I have been promoted to Keeper of Natural History at the National Museum of Ireland, just as the announcement was made by Minister Catherine Martin that the next phase of our major redevelopment and conservation project for the Dead Zoo will be going ahead.
Here's a video where I talk about our collections, the work done so far, and what comes next:
